The Success of Chip Kelly. The New Old School

Who do you believe would be a better fit? If you ask me their aren't that many OC or DC guys I think that are leaps and bounds better then Kelly. I really just don't know, who do you have in mind?

I'll readily admit to anyone that I really don't know. From my perspective I know enough to know what I'm afraid of but this early in the process I don't have a list of candidates of my own.

I'm not exactly going to cut myself and cry for weeks if we hire Kelly - he just scares me.

If we hire Kelly I really might eat my words - and I'm OK with that. I'd welcome it actually.

My thought is last time was the time to take a risk on a coach, not this time. The problem with the gamble is the higher potential to utterly fail, which I don't think our franchise is ready to absorb. When we were hiring Rivera we had one REALLY bad season with obvious blame and a lot of years of "almost". Now we've had a 2nd REALLY bad year in 3 seasons and the organization is a lot more "down" than they were. Different circumstances.

I see the potential for Kelly to be a genius in any system but where's the evidence that he will? (genuine question - a lot of people know a lot more about college ball than I do).

Like I said if we pick him he'll have my full support and I'm certainly not going to be whining about it. I'm just not sure it's the right move.

i don't think it's more of a risk than handing a DC or OC without any HC experience the keys to the car. i actually think it's riskier.

as many failures as there has been among college coaches changing to pro coaches, there's been more failures in DCs or OCs making the jump to HC. how often do we run into HCs that we find out were actually better as a DC or an OC than HC? it happens quite frequently. that's part of the reason there's been so much HC turnover in the last 10 years.

I understand that. Other then Chip Kelly I have my eyes on David Shaw at Stanford. This Saturday he actually will have a chance to audition for maybe a Head coaching job at the NFL level if his Stanford team can beat Oregon. I'm really hype about this match up!

Well....sure thing coaches from any source are nearly nonexistent. No matter who we hire we are all going to be collectively on pins and needles until we see how they turn out because you just never know. And no matter who we hire and how it turns out some of us are going to be wrong when it's all said and done.

I suppose it comes down to which risk you want and I come down on the other side of the fence with an arm and part of a leg still over the line.

it's not the speed of the players. it's the speed of his system. he runs a hurry up no huddle offense, but he holds the whole team to it.

he manages everything at a killer pace and he's also smarter than most coaches.

if you think it's just because he recruits fast players then you aren't paying attention.

Ok well you can't put average speed players in his system and succeed. So we are both correct. If you think he doesn't recruit on speed, you are blind.

who does he have as his QB?

not really the fastest or most athletic QB out there.

i think players' speed matters, but that isn't the reason for his success. not at all. only in that it fits his system, but i think that his system and team management makes everyone faster in that they have a faster pace.

i'd rather have a guy with college HC experience over a OC or DC from the pro level without HC experience.

i really don't think that a lack of NFL experience is going to hamper his ability to be effective as a coach at the NFL level. i don't think that's the case for everyone.

the more i've been looking into this guy, the more i've been convinced that he'd be a success at any level.

I appreciate your posts and understand more about him then I did before reading about him. One of the reasons I come to the huddle is getting info from others.

If we go that direction I hope you are right. My preference though would be getting a guy with head coach experience who was at least somewhat successful at the NFL level. I used to be on the Gruden bandwagon until I found out he was disliked by almost all of his players which is not a formula for success in the NFL. Still I think there are other guys out there who deserve a second shot much like Belicheck did after Cleveland.

What you pointed out could be a type the new GM may look to if he's not gunning for a college head coach. We need someone in here that they know can execute in the HC role. However looking around the league, the only guys with NFL-HC experience that I think could be a good fit for us are Perry Fewell and Bruce Arians (I don't know if Bruce would leave Indy though)....and Fewell (not a big proponent for esp. after Rivera) could happen if we get Abrams or Ross.

The guys I wouldn't mind taking a risk on that don't have HC experience would be the likes of Keith Butler, Rick Dennison, and maybe Gus Bradley but that would be it.

From college, Kelly of course given the thread but I really can't think of any others

The ones that may come unnoticed are the types who are the reverse: assistants in the NFL who have college HC experience or are a AHC like Brad Seely (our old ST coach) or one of the most intriguing options in Winston Moss of the Packers.

my first preference is that rivera gets things miraculously turned around and gets his house in order. a coaching change should be a last resort.unfortunately, esp. with a new GM coming in, i don't think that rivera sticking around is likely to happen.

my second choice is a belichek type deal where someone comes in with NFL HC experience. i want that guy to be relevant and progressive minded, though. of course it's easy to find that kind of guy, right? or.....a college HC with a lot of NFL experience as a player and/or coach like harbaugh. i think it's crucial for the guy to know how to manage a team as an HC right off the bat and if he knows the NFL then all the better.

my least favorite choice is an OC or DC without HC experience. sure...it could work out great and there's a lot of examples of HCs who did that and were just fine, but just as many times that fails. probably more. if we do go the coordinator route i hope it's with an OC. DCs have a tendency to play it safe.

i have stated many times before that i don't want an HC without NFL experience, but i think that chip kelly is an exceptional coach with whom it won't matter. he's a one of a kind, but you aren't going to know that unless you (not specifically you) get past these labels of "gimmick offense" "spread offense" or whatever labels we lazily throw out to classify people. it's really interesting seeing what all goes into not just his offense (it's not as simple as people make it out to be and it wouldn't be easy for NFL defenses to stop, either), but in his approach to play calling and team building and management.

one thing i would throw out, based on what i've seen about the way he builds a team and what he expects and counts on is that our first pick next year would be whatever OT was the best pick. there would be an overhaul of the Oline because most of the success of his offense depends on the OLine and is built around it.

I sincerely hope, whether we bring in Chip Kelly or not, that one of our top priorities this offseason is fixing this dismal offensive line. Football is won and lost on the lines...our defense is better with our newfound defensive line play. Offense is next.

If you fear talking out of your ass about a topic ( I realize this applies to a minority of Huddle members), click on the above link.

I am suprised so many wish to bring in a coach whose success is based TOTALLY on a version of the SHOTGUN ZONE READ. LOL..

Will the installation of this offense speed Newty's development into a pro QB ???

If Chip Kelly's practices are so great, why do his defenses ALWAYS suck ??? This is Kelly's best defense at Oregon. They are currently ranked 45th and will almost certainly fall further. Their weak schedule is finally getting a little tougher.

Chip Kelly has zero NFL experience. Not as a player, coach or ball boy.

The only college coach to move to the NFL with no NFL experience and win a Superbowl is Jimmy Johnson.

Look at him:

Johnson appeared in two national championship games (winning one) in 5 years at Miami. His teams were always based on great defense and what, at the time, was quite unusual at the college level: a pro style offense.

Many teams were still running the Wishbone in 1984 when Johnson took over the Miami program!!! Bear Bryant had just retired at Alabama in 1983 !!!

Johnson inheirted and kept almost all of Howard Schnellenberger's staff when he took over at Miami....why is this significant???

Schnellenberger was an NFL coach through and through. He was the OC for the Dolphins during their legendary perfect season of 1972. He succeeded at the college level precisely because he brought the pro style offense to the college game. Almost no one else was doing it. Johnson was bright enough to see that it worked and adopted it.

Following is a list of college "offensive guru's" to succeed at the NFL level:

Still want to hire Chip Kelly???
