I am intrigued. Not having any NFL experience at all tempers it a great deal though.

To keep it in perspective, the huddle anointed Rivera the next best thing. Now look where we are.

i think we tried to sell ourselves on him after we found out what the pool of potential HCs consisted of and then after he was hired.

i know i did.

jim harbaugh was who i wanted more than anyone. i'm finding myself just as much on the chip kelly bandwagon as i was on the harbaugh one.

Chip Kelly scares the hell out of me...but not in that good roller-coaster kinda way. He scares me in the "this is probably going to explode and take off your arm" kinda way.

I don't feel like we, as a franchise, are in a place where we can absorb bringing in a guy who runs a spread offense with no NFL experience and hope he can make the leap. I expect we're going to take a risk with whoever we hire because I do not expect a big name ex NFL HC to end up here but there are things that can be done to mitigate that risk. Not hiring someone who both runs a college style offense and has no NFL experience are two big things you can do help that mitigation.

Chip Kelly might make someone a great offensive head coach, and if he does good for him and that franchise. If we did bring him in I would do exactly like I did Rivera and find every possibly good thing about him I could find and sell myself on the hire to the best of my ability...he'd have my full support. But he's not the right choice for us right now IMO.

we just can't afford to take a risk on a college coach. which would we have rather had? a risky gamble in some college coach from the sucky PAC 10? or the more tried and proven route of promoting a proven and successful DC or OC from the NFL ranks? which would we have rather had jim harbaugh or ron rivera? (not that we had a shot at harbaugh)

many also felt we can't afford to take a chance on a running QB that comes from a spread offense.

But you just can't equate Harbaugh and Kelly. Harbaugh spent 16 years in the league and ran a pro style system at Stanford. The level of risk with Jim was way below what it would be with Chip.

again...i don't care about pro-style vs. spread. it's irrelevant.

the lack of NFL experience is the only real drawback i see, but i don't see it being that big of a deal because i think his team and game management style will transfer to the pros pretty seamlessly. what will be key to him is to have coaches on his staff with NFL experience, but only as an advisory role/sounding board.

If we hire Kelly I really might eat my words - and I'm OK with that. I'd welcome it actually.

My thought is last time was the time to take a risk on a coach, not this time. The problem with the gamble is the higher potential to utterly fail, which I don't think our franchise is ready to absorb. When we were hiring Rivera we had one REALLY bad season with obvious blame and a lot of years of "almost". Now we've had a 2nd REALLY bad year in 3 seasons and the organization is a lot more "down" than they were. Different circumstances.

I see the potential for Kelly to be a genius in any system but where's the evidence that he will? (genuine question - a lot of people know a lot more about college ball than I do).

Like I said if we pick him he'll have my full support and I'm certainly not going to be whining about it. I'm just not sure it's the right move.

Who do you believe would be a better fit? If you ask me their aren't that many OC or DC guys I think that are leaps and bounds better then Kelly. I really just don't know, who do you have in mind?
