The Success of Chip Kelly. The New Old School

I

f Oregon wins the BCS title this year — they are my pick to do so, though they have suffered a number of tough injuries on defense — I'm certain that Chip Kelly will be coaching next season in the NFL. Those who know Kelly well say it's "inevitable,"and his name, along with his friend Jon Gruden's, will be at the top of nearly every NFL coaching search. But despite all his success, there are those who still like to label his offense a gimmick, or, more practically, wonder if it's possible to run a spread offense in the NFL, given the beating a quarterback might endure.

This misunderstands Kelly's attack. "I look for a quarterback who can run and not a running back who can throw. I want a quarterback who can beat you with his arm," Kelly explained at a coaches clinic in the spring of 2011, emphatically adding, "We are not a The Golden Calf of Bristol type of quarterback team. I am not going to run my quarterback 20 times on power runs."

*snip*

Kelly explained that he merely needs a quarterback who, if the defense "forces" him to run, "can do it effectively." Although this rules out some of the NFL's best quarterbacks — from Peyton Manning to Tom Brady — it doesn't mean that his offense requires Cam Newton or RG3. Every year, the high school and college ranks are producing more and more quarterbacks who aren't utterly devoid of athleticism.4

Time will undoubtedly tell whether Kelly's offense can work in the NFL, but my vote is that it will. It would require Kelly finding the right players, but a Chip Kelly–coached NFL team would win for the same reasons that the Chip Kelly–coached college team wins. Behind the speed, the spread, the Daft Punk helmets, and the flashy uniforms, Oregon ultimately wins with old-fashioned, fundamental, run-it-up-the-gut football. I think everyone, even fans of the spread offense, can appreciate that.

Not been a fan of him coming here, but lately I've began to like the idea. I think Kelly is smart enough to taylor an NFL style offense. We may have the most attractive QB in his eyes. Cam would allow him to still have SOME of his college plays while still being able to run pro sets. As long as he has little to do with the D i'd be cool with him.

Said the same about Spurrier, Saban, Petrino, etc.

Those guys didn't have something that Chip would have. Cam Newton.

Chip and Cam would revolutionize the league.

Rivera has one of the best athlete/QB's of all time right now and has no idea how to maximize his potential.

    • Canales was brought in to fix Bryce. That was how he sold himself. He failed.  the panthers need a new qb, someone to coach him, and someone to build a defensive staff.  Canales has failed at developing a new qb. His big draft project XL is trending towards bust. His entire nfl resume before the panthers was one season as offensive coordinator on a stacked Bucs team, and being on the offensive staff when a 31 year old Geno smith finally put it all together. And he didn’t even pick his offensive coordinator. Assuming evero is gone, who’s he got in that phone to call? What low lvl porn addict evangelical from the bucs is ready to be Peter principled? There is nothing in his coaching history or his current performance that indicates he’s the person to move this team forward. Every other team knew this last cycle (panthers were only interview) and nothing has happened to change that perception   all people like you have is “well you can’t do it again it’s too soon but <random interval of time> will be different.  just pull off the bandage. There’s no reason to let this guy draft “his guy” except people wanting an excuse not to fire him after 2025.
    • Both Reich and Canales were saddled with trying to build and establish a viable scoring offense around Bryce Young. The best the offense looked this season and last season was with Andy Dalton who is also terrible but still better than Bryce Young. Which should be all anyone needs to know but still somehow there are weirdos here salivating over a ceiling of maybe on a really good day the 25th best QB in the league. We've already canned one entire staff over our first overall pick. You can fire everyone again to satisfy your need for vengeance and quickly come to the realization that your next hire will absolutely unequivocally be a downgrade yes man or you can blow up this QB room and then assess. If no progress next season then you can make changes and justifiably so.
    • Surprised this is the only post with this take.  This is like the Rhule kiss of death lol.
