Nice Newton quote.

Big plays are a staple of the Coryell.

That said, when we lost two starting Uglies in 2006, Henning switched things up and called the majority of pass plays as quick short passes (WCO style).

I'd say that needs to happen this season too if we don't want Newton to wind up like another David Carr.

We really need to add a lot more short passes into the game.

But Cam also has to get a lot better at throwing those short passes in a big hurry if we do that. I haven't done any tremendous amount of research but the eyeball test just from watching games seems to say he struggles with the underneath / short routes.

That's the downside. Short passes are not his forte'.

With that said, I'll take forcing him to do something that's not his strength over getting him killed trying to do what is.

Don't get me wrong - I'm behind the idea. It just scares the hell out of me that what we have to do to protect him is force him to do something he doesn't do well right now. But these 5-7 step drops and long developing routes are clearly not going to work right now so meh.

Of course I'd like to see him spend a lot less time in the gun too.

Same here.

For the sake of full disclosure, that particular adjustment didn't really help us win games in 06, but it probably kept Delhomme from getting hospitalized.

If you sit in shotgun formation every play with no running back behind you. Chances are you aren't going to run play action. Not too hard to figure we are going to throw it. If Cam cannot take a snap from a center very well then maybe he needs to practice

As much as I loved Chudz offense last year. I hate it this year. Where the hell is Dan Henning.

i don't think chud called as bad a game as people here are claiming. he successfully called a number of screen plays to counteract the constant pressure called by del rio. the two biggest breakdowns were newton's innaccracy on all types of throws in addition to our ineffective blocking in scheme and personnel. for as well as olsen made plays in the midfield range, his blocking was deplorable. the middle of our line struggled a lot today as well.

i still wonder just how we had more ToP than denver with all the three and outs today. as bad as the offense was, the defense was markedly better than solid today. our secondary was exposed, but manning does that to a lot of defenses. the front seven is shaping up to be a formidable unit going forward.

the quickest way to getting this team back to competitive is with improved o-line personnel. i think the guys in there right now are doing the best they can. it just isn't getting the job done. if we get some road graders in the guard spots the ground game can bounce back to offset those pressure packages and provide more cushion for the longer developing plays when necessary.

He does need to get the ball out faster, and have better pocket presence. Look at how quickly the ball came out of Peyton's hands. The reason for that is Peyton correctly read our defense pre-snap, and Peyton always anticipates his passes. Cam is always waiting for a guy to come open, and his footwork stinks. (Which is why his passes are not always accurate)

I blame a lot of Cam's struggles this year on the coaches, and that much is very true. Yet there should be something within him that says 'Man, I need to improve as a passer'. We should be seeing that desire inspite of the coaching by now, and I'm not seeing it. Today is the first time where I'm wondering Cam might not be our franchise QB. I could give two cents for his athletic ability, if you can't throw the ball in this league with accuracy and anticipation, you won't ever do anything.

To a limited degree some blame can placed on the coaching but lets face it Cam is neither throwing the ball well or making good decisions. The is plenty of blame to go around

I think the coaching has put this guy in a bad position from day one with the read option. We've been preparing in the off-season to run that garbage offense, and now when we actually have to run a pro offense, Cam wasn't fully prepared to do so. I think last year, people were surprised Cam could throw the ball as accurately as he did. Yet now when teams know what to expect of Cam, he is struggling. Now he has to learn to be a pro QB, and he wasn't prepared to win with his arm.

I blame the preparation part on the coaches, yet I should be seeing something from Cam that wants to be a great passer. Yet his pocket presence is terrible. I know the o-line played badly yesterday, but early in that game they gave Cam time to make a throw. Yet Cam constantly waited for guys to get wide open, and he stood in one spot, actually he paced in one spot. This allowed for him to be sacked many times. Then when he tried to get away from the pressure, he stumbled around like a drunk man.

A good QB in the pocket is like a jedi. They feel pressure, and they move accordingly, while still keeping their focus down the field. Cam only moves when he sees the pressure in his face, by then it's too late, plus he is no longer focused down the field but on the pressure. Some of these things just can't be taught at this level, you have to bring that coming in. This is why I fear Cam may not be the one to lead us to the big dance. As bad as it sounds, we may need to trade him in the off season, and get the most out of him that way.

i've gone back and watched the safety on game rewind now that it's available.

chudster called 3 vertical routes that denver had absolutely blanketed, naturally. tolbert got hung up and was never able to peel off as a checkdown option. there was nobody around and newton couldn't throw it away short without risking a safety on intentional grounding anyway. just a dumbfounding play call.

Cant say I really much agree with this. While Manning is the Bar set for QBs, every time he got a guy in his face he missed the pass. Every time he was surrounded by defenders he missed his pass. No only that but Manning also was checking out of plays and his OC was using different routes.

Cam on the other hand is not allowed to check to a run play, He is always in a 5 step drop because of the routes called, and he is surrounded by defenders with there hands up. Not going to get many passing lanes when that happens. If he does release early he has to throw high and risk a INT.

From what I see Cam needs to improve on is his touch. He jets the ball out if its a 30 yard pass, a 10 yard pass, or a screen/check down play. Thats something he really needs to improve on.

this team is a vertical attacking team but dont have the OL or WR to be effective for it. when plays are called for Cam to get the ball out fast he does, for instance when Lafell was in the slot yesterday and ran a quick slant. not only did the ball come out fast but it was 3rd and 14 and Lafell got the 1st. i dont understand why the OC does not realize this.

and Manning passes were mostly quick hitters, curls and outs. 2 deep routes to Thomas and Dressen.

we ned to quit this idea of being slaves to a system.

screw the coryelll. it's not going to work in games yesterday.

go with a simple spread using 4-5 receiver sets and go to the open man. use play action in single back sets (except in goal line/short yard situations) and have as a goal to get rid of the ball within a couple seonds. let cam take advantage of holes given by defenders and run.

don't need to get complicated or fancy. don't need to get 20 yards on a play (although if it happens, cool). just keep picking up 5-7 yards a play.
