-- We'll have more on this in tomorrow's Herald, but top pick Everette Brown's getting most of his early work on the left side of the defense, where he's going to have to become a better run defender against bigger tackles. They're hoping his quickness advantage over RTs will compensate for that, but he's going to have to work to make sure he doesn't get swallowed up.

Well, looks like that's what Brown will be having to pick up to see more playing time.

Fox let it be known that he's now lost 25 pounds since the end of the year. As an organization, the Panthers lost a collective 570 pounds, Fox said. Offensive coordinator Jeff Davidson lost the most weight, dumping 71 pounds from his large frame.

6. Defensive end Mike Rucker, who will work as a color commentator for three Carolina preseason games this year, took in practice from the sidelines on Monday.

DAY 5 from gannt

As for the defensive linemen, it's usually DEs Charles Johnson an Tyler Brayton pacing the group, again pointing to having experienced guys who can show the way.

-- It's always a little deceiving watching these non-contact sessions. You can tell essentially nothing about linemen, other than some obvious alignment and depth chart issues.

But you can see that the Panthers have more speed and competition at the skill positions than in the past, and it's going to make for some interesting decisions come cut day.

When you start factoring in how many fullbacks and tight ends they might have to keep, there are going to be some hard calls on wideouts.

I guess they are expecting Peppers back but if he dose not come back I would think Brown should be on the Right side no the Left because of his size.

This is what I have been preaching for a while. A few seasons ago during summer school James Anderson was heralded as a starter his rookie season. How did that turn out...

day 7 from gantt

They bugged out quickly after this morning's practice, for their annual team golf tournament. So be on the lookout for back strains and sunburns tomorrow.

Every time they go off-campus for such an activity, I think of former DT Kindal Moorehead, who once injured his knee during the team bowling tournament. This was after he was bitten by a spider during his rookie training camp, and his arm swelled grotesquely because of the infection.

I was sad when Kindal left, partly because he was good to have around in case of a thunderstorm, since he reduced your chances of being hit by lightning.

-- Talked to WR Ryne Robinson a bit for a story in tomorrow's Herald. He's on a bit of a maintenance program as he comes back from last year's knee injury, alternating days of practice.

Still, he's out there with the kids who are competing for the return jobs.

Had he stayed well last year, there's a chance they don't even keep D.J. Hackett, because Robinson was having a great camp on offense. Now, he needs to get well and stay well so he can compete with Dwayne Jarrett for the third job.

-- Took my 4-year-old son Sam with me to practice this morning. He agreed that DT Maake Kemoeatu might be the biggest person he's ever seen in person.

Sam was amazed by Kemoeatu's custom-built helmet, the largest size they make, with the pads inside shaved down to accomodate him.

"Dad," Sam observed. "His helmet doesn't even fit."

-- Small note, but an interesting one as they worked on two-minute offense against nickel defense Thursday. Even though he's a starter this year, CB Richard Marshall will maintain his inside responsibilities when they go to three corners. C.J. Wilson will cover an outside receiver when they go to an extra DB.

Second-round pick CB Sherrod Martin's also getting a look at the nickel spot, as the converted safety is working to learn a new position.

more notes from the observer

Center Ryan Kalil looks a bit bigger and more muscular than last season, which should serve him well next season

If fourth-round draft pick Mike Goodson is anywhere near as good as he looks in summer school practices, the Panthers have added an extra dimension to their offense.

There was a reunion of former Carolina defensive linemen at a fundraiser Thursday night. Rucker, Sean Gilbert, Al Wallace and Shane Burton were present and all still looked capable of doing some damage on the field.

what kind of extra dimension can another running back bring to the panthers offense? we've got running down.

unless of course he can hit a tight end on a ten yard crossing route

Are you kidding me? At the very least he gives us a lot more speed on 3rd downs, especially since he can play from the slot. Right now, Steve Smith is our only really fast/quick WR we have unless Robinson gets that knee squared away and they start using him on offense.

Reggie Bush is the right comparison, because Goodson can do a lot for the passing game. Of course, this is all under the assumption that he continues his progress when they put the pads on and somebody decides to test him like they tested Stewart last year. We all know that when Dan Morgan decided to test Eric Shelton, that was all she wrote for that young man.
