NFL.com - Fox "fired" = Bullshit

he tried with brett basanez and matt moore, no? unfortunately, he will probably pick up mike glennon and have him train under manning, and in the end fox won't look that bad to denver fans. god, i hate the man.

he did everything he could to put off getting moore on the field....in '07 and '09.

and basenz never had a chance. i doubt that fox really had any intention of doing anything with him.

saw this a while back....

Shortly after Fox’s hire, Hurney was promoted to general manager, which meant he had final say over all personnel decisions, although he regularly downplayed his importance by insisting all moves were a collaborative team effort between he, Fox and the heads of the pro and college scouting departments.

Everyone agreed the best plan was to begin building around a solid defense and a power running game, which meant some radical changes compared to the philosophy Seifert had installed.

There was also a new emphasis placed on building through the draft rather than going out and buying free agents, as was so often the case in the Seifert era.

That theory applied to most positions, but curiously enough not the most important one of the field — quarterback. At the time, neither Fox nor Hurney placed a high emphasis on finding a young quarterback in the draft. In fact, in Fox’s nine years at the helm, the Panthers never selected a quarterback in the first three rounds of the draft.

The theory behind it was drafting a young quarterback was often a waste of time since it took so long to develop them and, by the time they were fit for duty, their contracts were generally up.

The Panthers felt they could get by with a “system quarterback,” a player who could simply manage the offense and play mistake-free and not be relied on to throw for 3,000 yards and 30 touchdowns.

Again, Fox isn't a GM. For every player that busted here was Marty's fault. But now you guys are saying Fox wanted and was responsible for bringing in these QB's. I see convenience is your best arguments.

hurney built the team the way fox wanted....that is until the 2010 draft.

pretty well known that fox didn't want a young QB and that he thought it was a waste of time.

I buy that and agree, but isn't that true for our current head coach?

People here tend to put bust problems strictly on Hurney when it's crazy to think the coaches have no input. But now the draft problems when Fox was here was on him, so the huddle would conveniently convey.

true for rivera to a certain extent.

JR said that the new HC wouldn't have the freedom or control that fox did over personnel decisions. he felt that over the years fox had done that to the detriment of the team.

i think that rivera has had some say in matters and probably this year more than last, but hurney did things his way...which wasn't that far off from the fox way of building a team. hurney seemed to be more up on current trends in the league and more open to drafting QBs, but then that might have been under JR's orders.

fox can't take all of the credit/blame for the way the team was built but neither can hurney. they were partners in crime until one became more interesting than preserving a job rather than strictly adhering to "it is what it is". hurney should have been replaced when fox was, though, and both of them should have been let go a year before fox was, but that's an old argument and discussion.

Call it whatever you want, but Fox was the equivalent of "fired."

i wish.

he was given one more year to get a winning record doing it his way and he couldn't pull it off.

he wasn't fired, but he should have been after the '09 season.

he finished out his contract...showed up and took home a paycheck. that's not being fired.

Its hard to say hurney is more "up on current trends in the league" when he sinks so much of our cap in running backs this year.

The team didn't draft QBs because up until his surgery Delhomme got the job done. Carr was a high profile acquisition attempting to upgrade the position during that time as well. Its not like we had the number one pick a lot and the league was different during the first half of Fox's tenure. Now it truely is a QB driven league.

A lot changed after our super bowl in the way DBs can cover. Those rule changes pretty much ended Ricky Manning Jrs career and pushed the league towards where it is today.

fox should have been fired.

Part of me believed Fox was kind of trapped into this. No reputable coach would take over the 2010seson where JR gave the team absolutley nothing, pickles as a qb, what kind of coach would put that on their record for a small market team. JR pulling investment in the team for a whole year for somehting that never happend.Think about it.

I've started to blame JR more than Fox. Fox knows what he is doing, he is head coach material. It was his time to go, that is not to be overlooked, but the fact remains he took on a shitty situation, a coach who made a playoff run with second stringers, a coach that never finished worse than 7-9, 8-8, with nothing could not do better than 2-14 because of what JR gave him.

JR was not going to fire Fox, he says because of money and I say that is bullshit. He was held onto to be a lame duck, but worse than a lame duck...a lame duck with an owner who gave nothing. If JR respectfully let Fox keep his vets or ..any vets... for one more year we could have pulled a better record.

Fox was not going to be fired in 2010 and certainley not 2009 after Hurney stupidly resigned jake after a surgery and a bombed playoff exposure, and I say exposure because he was going downhill all season, with the run game and oline being the crutch for everything. That was some Hurney bullshit.

One thing can be seen for certain when we'll look back during the end of the Fox era, Hurney and JR had a much more serious, negative effect on this team than Fox did.

i was more thinking that the emphasis on picking up more WRs and QBs in the 2010 season was under JR's pushing rather than a philosophy change of hurney.

carr was a feeble attempt to upgrade. the guy was shell shocked. i know they intended for him to sit a couple years and recover from his time at houston, but the problem was that they didn't want to develop a QB, they wanted a developed QB that could step in and just manage a game.

when that attempt failed and carr got the boot...what did they do to try and make things better? nada. fox wanted to win doing the same things with the same people he did getting to the superbowl. i think that jake was released because they knew that fox was still going to try and start him ahead of the younger QBs.

whatever the reasons....the team needed to change directions.
