If RR gets poocanned, what happens to the Defense?

Word on the street is that JR didn't want RR to begin with, and the team got off too a terrible start. Likely, the late losses to ATL and CHI are going to be too much to overcome for the playoffs this year. So, it's still quite likely that RR will get canned at the end of this year. After all, it's JR's team and he gets what he wants.

However, the D has made a dramatic turnaround in just this second year (and only half way through that). They are a top 10 D without 52 and 20, who were the consensus two best players on our D coming into the year. Our secondary is a whole bunch of 'who?' type players, and we have Morgan Freeman and BB King playing in the middle of the line. Yet, the D is playing extremely well and it's not a fluke. The staff has done a hell of a job coaching up the D to be a fantastic unit. RR has a history of making a great defense out of unknowns, and he's done it again.

Is the development of the D enough to keep RR around? Is it enough for you to want him to stay as our HC? Our D is fun to watch again. Imagine how nasty they will be with just a couple of upgrades in the secondary. Personally, I'd be happy with keeping RR and getting a new OC who's not too smart for his own good. I'm a little skittish to think of what happens to this great new D they've built if he goes.

Pie?

You have to let the season play out with Ron. There is promise, although with a total collapse this year I doubt he returns. Get back to 6-10, and he may have done enough. Shall have to wait and see.

Hope he gets to 6-10 and stays around for another season, to see if we can pull off 6-10 three years in a row. That type of consistent below average performance is what defines this franchise.

smh

If I was JR, Ron has to get to 8-8. Just saying. One could argue a lot of reasons for Ron staying even with 6-10.

This season is ridiculous anyways.

Firing RR would be a mistake.. Year 3 is the decider. But new a GM will probally make a move. With the Dline playing better than any time in the last 5 years Im excited for the rest of this season and see where we stand as a unit.

As long as there is no regression and the team plays hard Rivera deserves to play it out. Chud is the main one who needed to make serious adjustments and Deangelo just did the Ill wait till week 6 to start playing attitude .. Which he has done last few years.

Based on what the D has done and if we can close the season strong, I might be tempted to give RR one more year. But the catch is, I'd let Chud go and bring in a new OC that had sufficient experience that he could serve as an interim HC should the team start off slow again next year.

Our problem this year is we couldn't have fired RR had Jerry wanted to, as there was no good candidate on the staff to serve as an interim.

Keep RR's feet to the fire. I love the D, but the O and the game management have to improve.

    • Easily. To be able to plug in a backup LT without much drop off from your starter? That could mean the difference between playoffs or sitting at home in January. Good/serviceable smart young and healthy LTs that won’t lose you a ball game at reasonable $$ don’t just come along every day. Everyone talks about the most important positions on a football team… backup LT is in the top 10.  Picture next year… the team is scrappy and competitive, 4 and 3 record, second place in the South. Morale is good. devastating run game that Let’s our marginal defense get plenty of rest. We play the Bucs and win, going to 5 and 3, but we lose Ickey to a high ankle sprain. Atl loses that week and are now at 5 and 3 as well. There is no Ickey and no BC because we let him go… and we go in to Atl the next week for a battle of first in the south. Week after that is the Jets…. Now they lose both by 10 and 3, respectively, and fall to 5 and 5 going in to their bye week. Atl is at 7 and 3. Out of typical Panthers desperation, they try to rush Ickey back in to the lineup with a saints game coming up…  Back to good old Panthers football, always playing catchup. Another season at .500 and the fans sadly rejoice in mediocrity, when playoffs were in reach. This team always overestimates its ability to pick up quality o line depth in the draft or FA and it always blows up in their faces. Like Chuba, I see him as being part of the core that Dan is trying to build. Work on his contract now and see if we can come out with something mutually beneficial. I’d consider 3 yrs at $25m to be very fair.
    • it would be great to have "double trouble" again, I even had a T- shirt for Williams and Stewart and the double trouble logo, was a great time to be Panthers fan. We shall see...
    • Sounds like a plan. Those are the teams we should be mimicking! lol
