Kirwan Likes Jarrett in 09

He needs to step up, because if he busts and Moose retires, all we have is Smitty. One has to really think Pete Carroll has his crap together at USC, because players leave there as campus stars and become professional busts in the NFL...especially at WR.

we will have to pass a whole lot more and he would have to see the field a lot more than moose for that to happen. neither of which i would count on. he will see a nice improvement over previous years but still i'm not counting on much more than 40 catches 500 yards and 2-3 TDs.

he could get over 50 but i would be happy with 40/500/2-3.

So would I, but I'm not seeing him as Moose's replacement. I think he'll be more productive, but that's not say much given his history. The team really should have tried to get one upgrade at WR. I realize the D.J Hackett thing blew up on them, but the team WISELY gave him a 'trial' contract. That unsuccessful experiment, unto itself, should not have lent itself to non-upgrade at the position though.

I DO NOT wnat another Colbert and Carter scenario where the team hangs on to undrachievers too long hoping against all odds that they'll somehow break out of their lackluster track record.

This should really be Jarrett's last year if he doesn't produce. Smitty's not getting any younger, niether is Moose and we have who waiting to take over the reigns if Jarrett isn't able to get on course? Robinson, Moore, or some other undrafted FA?

replacement in the very near future? no.

down the road i very much could see it and i could even see him becoming the #1 WR for us at some point. the kid has some incredible tools and size. the only question mark there has ever been is his commitment, and grasp on the non-receiving part of the game. i think that his commitment is where it should be and the other parts of it is coming because of his commitment to learn and improve.

i seriously see him as a keyshawn johnson type of receiver with just as much potential.

There are two factors at play here. How much loner will Moose play (and playing at a #2 WR level) and if/when will Jarrett hit his potential.

Ideally, Moose will play at a high level another 2 or 3 years and Jarrett will hit his stride this season.

If not, we need to get a top notch FA or get a guy in the draft next year.

I have been saying for year's that we never fill Ricky Prohel's shoe's and that has hurt our passing offense ever since. Jake hasn't had that slot security blanket and has to rely on Smitty on most third and critical situations. EVERYBODY knows that and the reason we generally are a bad 3rd down passing team. A couple of years ago I really wanted us to draft Anthony Gonzalez, a Prohel-like clone and he's essentially taking Marivn Harrison's place in Indy.

I don't see any Panthers #3 WR getting 50 catches unless either Smitty or Moose gets injured and he has to move up, or the running game suddenly goes bad.

FWIW though, I thought Jarrett produced last season in the few opportunities that he had.

i have a bit of optimism about goodson filling that role. i could see him as a very solid 3rd down type receiving option. that's what it sounds like the panthers have in mind for him as well. i have a feeling that he is going to get plenty of opportunities this year to show us.

So your thinking Goodson is switching positions totally? I've read he's going to be like a 'slash' player KR, RB and some WR. If he does make the switch to WR, then hopefully he'll develop into a solid slot guy. However, If he's used as a 'gimick' WR, I'm not sure that solves the problem.

Jarrett will not be the starter in Carolina, but he should get the call when the team goes to three or four wideouts. He only caught 10 passes for 119 yards and no touchdowns last season, but I expect a very solid year from Jarrett and the Panthers' new-look offense
.

what is kirwan talking about..lol
