The mega region of Southern California is home to 22 million people. I doubt there will be a problem filling the stadium.

Why did the Raiders and Rams leave?

I know stadium issues were part of it, but you have Hollywood and all of those attractions and amenities associated with it, major league baseball, one NBA teams steeped in tradition and still viewed as contenders and another on the rise with young stars, and oh yeah, the Kings who just won the Stanley Cup, if there wasn't a lockout.

I'm sure fans would come the first year or so, but it would die down after that, especially if the team isn't successful... There's just too much to do and no matter how popular the game of football is, I don't see it sustaining interest in the form of ticket sales in L.A.

There's a plethora of reasons.

The biggest one was the stupidity of Al Davis playing at the Colisium. Worst neighborhood to ever place a stadium and with over 100k seats, it was nearly impossible to ever sell out which caused blackouts and fans weren't able to watch the games on tv. Gang violence associated itself with the team which dissuaded many fans to not attend in person. Imagine going to a game and your life was threatened by street gangs. That's not exactly a place families would go. I believe any new team will have different colors to prevent such a conflict to occur.

If any of you recall the history of the Panthers, the NFL had great concerns about the Panthers as an inaugural team having the color black as the primary color. Fact is Charlotte doesn't have the gang problem LA has/had. I believe as long as the Raiders aren't around, it won't be a problem this time.

As for the Rams, the team actually played in Anaheim Stadium which was a baseball field. God bless her soul passed away but she was the major force in the team leaving. The stadium was behind in box seats and other revenue making and her best bet after the 1994 earthquake was to move the team to St. Louis. I think the fan base for Rams fans is big enough for them to last this time around.

Fact is a new state of the art Stadium will no doubt want fans to come in. If a fan like me has watched a game in Charlotte, Minnesota, Arizona and San Diego, I wouldn't mind driving down the freeway to watch my home grown team.

The biggest obstacle is gaining new fans. The NFL has been gone so long that everyone who watches the NFL in LA has their teams already. It would be the fair weather fans that would become diehards.

Back in 1994, how'd your prepare yourselves to start watching the Panthers assuming you already had a team? It would be the same situation.

OK, let's talk Los Angeles Football history because much of the Huddle population was born when there wasn't Pro Football in LA anymore..

The Rams came to Los Angeles in 1946.

They stayed 48 years.

This was long before corporate sponsors, luxury suites or even much Television coverage for that matter.

Where did the Rams play?

The Rams played in the LA Coliseum.

So named because it was built in the 1930s in anticipation of the 1932 Summer Olympics.

Oh yes boys and girls, there were Olympics before Micheal Phelps was selling cereal and Subway sandwiches every 9 minutes on your TV.

As the decades flew by, 50s, 60s, 70, 80s, the Coliseum continued to detoeriorate and has become the shythole located in the slum that it is today.

Imagine if the Panthers were still playing in Clemson today.

The Rams fleeing to St. Louis was never about fan attendance or love of the Rams. It was about that bytch Georgia Frontierre having the then new and shiny Trans World Dome waved under her nose.

At the time the Rams were playing their home games at the Big A in Anaheim. The home of the California Angels. Nothing worse than trying to play football in a converted baseball stadium. So the Rams left town, fans be damned.

Speaking of shythole stadiums this is where Da Raiders come in.

Al Davis was stuck in Oakland in a shythole Oakland Alameda Stadium where the Raiders first played an AFC game back in 1966.

Al saw an opportunity to play Oakland vs Los Angeles in hope for a shiny new stadium and loaded the buses and set out for LA.

Massive law suits followed between Al and the NFL.

Bottom line, eventually the Raiders headed back to Oaklnd from whence they came and to this day still play football in the same shythole. Think back earlier this season and remember the Raiders in Prime Time with the Oakland Athletics dirt baseball infield on the 50 yard line.

The Rams leaving and the Raiders coming and going were always about Stadium deals.

IMHO only one way the NFL returns to LA:

Deep pockets as is already in position at two potential sites build a 1 Billion dollar plus stadium that will be shared by two teams as is currnetly done in New York by the Giants and Jets.

The fans will attend in droves and lead the League in attendance as they do for the Dodgers, Angels, Lakers, Clippers, Kings and Ducks.

Will one of the NFL teams be the Panthers?

No chance.

Thanks for the detailed summary KG. Being in my late 20s, I was only mildly aware of what was going on with the Rams and Raiders as far as L.A. went, but heard about what went down here and there.

That being said, I just don't appreciate people begging and drooling over the Panthers being mentioned as a possible team being targeted for relocation. After enduring it ourselves, I don't wish that on any other city. In basketball, we were lucky enough to get a new team, but I doubt that would happen for whatever city loses a franchise to L.A., unless they do expand to London.

I just hope and pray we (as the Carolina Panthers) never relocate and hope this is all conjecture.

All this article says is that the idea of the Panthers leaving town scares the hell out of the chairman of the charlotte chamber of commerce. (no sh*t, really?)

It also says the mayor of LA made overtures to JR during the DNC... I'm guessing the LA mayor has made overtures to several teams attempting to lure someone to his city - nothing to see here.

I would really like to know what the succession plan is in the event of JR's passing... I'm not as concerned about the team moving as I am about the team falling into the hands of another pinhead like Dan Snyder.

I just can't see it. The Carolinas- Charlotte in particular is one..if not fastest growing regions in the USA. yes we are small market-transplant city etc. but the report I heard last night on the news said The Cats are needing around 80 million for upgrades and will only ask the city for some of that....hell some player salaries are that amount. There's just too many other scenarios that make more sense as far as putting a team in LA (Chargers?). And no matter how much some of our "fans" hate JR, the man can not be so dumb as to not have a succesion plan in place.

You and I should buy the team from JR. Combined we probably spend more at the team store in a year than most people do in a life time. You can be the guy running things and I will be in charge of designing a plan to keep opposing fans out of BofA.
