Cap situation

We are no worse off than the Saints for example. Your cap is always taken up by the 10-20 highest paid guys. Teams fill in the rest with drafted players, journeymen, and decent priced free agents. We are not in cap hell and will be okay just like we have in the past. The biggest problem is that we thought the cap was going to go up in 2014 due to the TV contract and found out that we apparently borrowed money against the increase to get through 2011 therefore the cap was going to be flat. This problem will go away in 2015 when the big money does kick in. The problem is managing the cap in 2013 and 2014 while we wait. Many teams are in the same situation we are.

Ya but the saints top players justify the contracts given to them based by their performance. They've been a top team until this year..but they are also without their HC.

We shell out money to injured, aging, loser players based off loyalty from the previous GM.

I am not saying we shouldn't evaluate players at year's end and decide if we want to keep them based on their salaries and what scheme we are going to run and then decide if they fit into our future plans. That makes total sense. The new GM will get to decide that and decide if he has faith in Rivera and his staff or if we need a change.

I expect we will have some turnover and change in the future but it won't be just because of the cap but as you say, we won't be able to justify keeping them at the price we are paying. For example, it is very hard to justify keeping Williams, Stewart and Tolbert if we are not going to run the ball 30 times a game. It isn't just that one or more isn't productive so much as they don't fit the way we are using them. Having the best running trio in football is wasted if we don't run the ball. Not having great tight ends and receivers also makes little sense if we are mostly be a passing team. We seem to be built player wise for a Fox type offense but are using a SD Chargers type offense instead. They are not meshing.

With Hurney, Rivera, Chud there was some obvious disconnect. Hurney acquired players and paid players that fit a Foxball type team. But Rivera and Chud decide to go in a college read style offense....the point of views just didn't match...and now this organization is paying for it. You don't pay $80 mil for your backfield...and then run shotgun and have your QB rush more than your backs...just doesn't make sense

the problem was they tried rebuilding/restructuring the team while the old coach was there and signed a bunch of gigantic extensions to players before the new coach even had a chance to look at his team.

it's been a clusterf*ck ever since.

hurney should have seen the door when fox did.

It's like beating our heads against the wall...

I just hope Hurney knows he messed things up...no way he's sitting there thinking he did a good job here

I don't see Beason staying after this year tho.

We got LUKEEEEEEEEEEEE

Cut him and we still face a nice cap hit and can't trade a guy coming off two IR seasons with the largest MLB contact in the NFL......

Beason will have to stay and play WLB but hopefully he restructures....we have paid him a poo of money for little in return in regards to his huge deal.

^^this.

we get too fixated and worked up about the cap.

it looks incredibly bad from my PoV and probably would to any GM, but i doubt any candidates that are even considered won't be coming in without a decent plan to work around this mess that hurney created.

people have worked through much uglier cap situations.
