Cap situation

I've read, heard different figures

I've read in a Pat Yasinskas article that the panthers have $130 mil committed to 46 players going into next year. Putting us 5 mil OVER the cap...

While listening to OTB I heard them say we are $4 mil UNDER the cap...

I've read on the huddle we are $10 mil OVER going into next season..

So what's the real figure? I predict that Gross, Gamble, Beason are asked to restructure as well...

It's best not to wrap your head around the salary cap challenges we may or may not face. The new GM will, by his own merit or by the aid of a salary cap skirting brain trust, will navigate his away around it. The salary cap is literally one big loop hole that can and will be exploited.

^^this.

we get too fixated and worked up about the cap.

it looks incredibly bad from my PoV and probably would to any GM, but i doubt any candidates that are even considered won't be coming in without a decent plan to work around this mess that hurney created.

people have worked through much uglier cap situations.

Whoever comes in as GM is going to have some tough decisions to make to navigate the cap situation, but that's not all bad. We're going to have to face the fact that we aren't getting our money's worth out of some players/positions and rectify it.

That said, it is going to be very difficult to sign any big money free agents this year (not that they would anyway) until we get the cap and roster in order.

I don't think there are any tricks to fixing the any contract issues. They either have to be restructured or cut. I get the feeling there will be several popular Panthers saying good bye in the next year or two.

All of this doom and gloom just like last year and the year before that and so on. Who have we had to cut that we all wanted to stay for cap reasons? No one I can think of. If we got rid of them it was because we didn't think they were that productive or not worth the money we were paying them. But I can't think of a productive player in his prime that we have cut because we were over the cap.

Until that happens, these type of threads are chicken little the sky is falling threads.

If you haven't noticed, the team has sucked the past 3 years and has brought in no significant help.

Oh I have noticed, but we have brought in a lot of guys who have helped. Have we brought in big priced free agents? No. but that is not how you build a championship team anyway. If you were a Panther fan from 1997 to 2000 you saw a bunch of big name free agents and we sucked as well.

The issue has been not having a franchise quarterback for much of that time and needing to groom and develop Cam for the role. Unfortunately we didn't have a starter already there who could carry the load while Cam learned much like Rodgers. And depth has been more of an issue than the starters for much of that time when the injuries hit. Add to that the job Richardson did gutting the franchise, a lame duck coach in 2010 and the time it has taken Rivera to figure things out and you have the main reasons we have sucked. I think that believing a few big name free agents would have made all the difference is naive at best.

I'm def not saying to abandon thread, because this is still insightful information worth talking about. Some cuts will be coming. Some of them might be pretty deep. All I was trying to point out was that its absolutely possible for our salary cap hell to turn into a manageable situation, and we will probably have enough left over to sign a few key pieces in the FA market as well.

This thread is 10X better than Cam's so sexy the media hates him thread!

Gross, Gamble, Johnson, Beason, DWill

These are the contracts that are killing us....which one of these guys is earning their contract?

Gross - washed up and needs to be moved from LT

Gamble - IR..and aging...ball skills worth his $?

Johnson - gigantic contract. Has shown up for a 1.5 games this year....I honesty don't feel he's worth 70+ mil w/ a 30 mil bonus...

Beason - Injuries have gotten the best of him. IR two years in a row...clearly not the same guy

DWill - demoted to 2nd string. 40+ mil...didn't make an impact as a starter

These 5 are up for re-structure and/or release
