williams carrying the ball more?

“I don’t know what I did or what I’ve done to be demoted, but we were talking the other day, and this is the first time that you get demoted and actually get more carries, so I’m actually happy with it. Because I got more carries and more playing time than I would have had I been a starter.”

He’s right. Against Chicago, Williams had 11 carries for 33 yards as the backup. Only against New Orleans did he have more carries (14) in a game all season.

When he plays, Williams is getting the ball at a higher percentage than when he was the starter.

In the past two games, as the backup, Williams has carried the ball 68.4 percent of the snaps he’s been in (13 carries on 19 snaps). In the five games he was a starter, Williams carried the ball 39.7 percent of the time he was in.

These stats are circumstantial. We started running the ball more last Sunday, and as a result his percentage went up. It's amazing what happens when you begin to phase out the read option...

But no... People here are all like "trade him" free up some cap space....

Bottom line is this. We can all sit here and try to prognosticate all we want and play "ESPN analyst" or Panthers "insiders" until we're blue in the face and fingers. The reality is that none of us will ever be GM's and this problem with cap space isn't as big of a deal that Anyone on here is making it out to be. Decisions will be made, and they're outside of our control. Whether we agree or not or love a player or not it changes nothing. As a fan, all I can do, all we can do is hope for the best and SUPPORT these players and this team throughout the rest of what has started off as one of the most tumultuous seasons in Panthers History.

Anyone that has advocated a trade of any of our players (especially in these circumstances) should be flat out ashamed of themselves.

Does anyone think maybe this (less carries & demotion) is more about leverage on restructuring his contract, than it is about #34 being or not being a great runner?

no.

people keep focusing just rushing, but today's starting backs do so much more.

stewart is the better all around back. that's why he played such a high percentage of snaps last season and the trend is continuing this season.

sooner or later people will realize all they did was officially name stewart the starter, but he's been playing the role since last season.

I do understand what you're saying. Under the current style we run, Stewart does fit the needs at RB better. I'm just thinking the staff is placing more pressure on #34 to do things he is not designed to do in order to lower his value and numbers of snaps played. This should create an environment to lessen the teams need for him, thus allowing the contract negotiations to favor the Panthers cap.

As for the money a player gets. Rushing yards does way into the max money they can get. I'm saying they are utilizing the better RB in Stewart while placing the overall cap number in a better situation too.

i understand what you're saying, but i think red tape plays less into it from here on out than it did the past season and a half.

williams is on his way out. he's either going to restructure or get cut. it's just that black and white. stewart starting is not a way to create leverage for anything.

if anything, williams was forced onto the field more than intended the past season and a half because of his contract...hands have been untied now that hurney is gone.
