The thing that's odd is that they've supposedly decided they just don't want him anymore, or that he and Hurney were so tied that he immediately needed demoted or traded ASAP. That part's odd. He's the more rational guy to cut, but the idea he has to just immediately GTFO is weird.

it's not hard to figure out. the intent was not to get rid of him right now.

williams got demoted and everyone overreacted. naturally, he's not going to be happy about it. other teams know it and are considering throwing hooks in the water to see what bites.

contrary to popular rumors, the panthers are not going to just let williams go at the first sign of an offer. they want to dump his contract, but it's going to be one on of 3 conditions...

1. a team ponies up a can't refuse offer by the trade deadline

2. he restructures, or...

3. he gets cut after june 1st 2013.

2. Restructure and we'll trade him to a team that will have quality carries for him. Restructuring helps us in the future and will allow a trade to go smoother.

DWill doesn't seem like a selfish player/person and he got his payday. I think he would accept one of the above options if the deal is fair.

I had posted earlier that if he were traded immediately, the $9.6 million would hit in 2012. From your post and other readings, I now see that I was incorrect. The $9.6 hits in 2013 as you correctly point out.

Let's say they don't trade him tomorrow. As I understand it, we could cut him as early as the start of the league year in March, designate him a June 1st cut, and split the acceleration into two years ($3.2 million in 2013, and $6.4 million in 2014). As his salary next year would be $4, 750,000, we could generate some cap savings for next year should he be cut. The net impact in 2014 would be about $700,000 negative based on the info I have.

Does all this look correct?

yeah. I'm not saying it's completely out of bounds to say, "this team has one high paid back, we'll deal with this eventually." It's just weird that Hurney's gone, and suddenly DW is an afterthought.

Ideally I'd prefer a GM to do this, and have that as part of his own plan. For now, the worry is that if he's not dealt now, there won't be a market for him in the future, and the same numbers will come without a pick at all.

yeah, they could do that (push '14 and '15's signing bonus proration into '14).

His total hit for '13 would be the $3.2 mil that's going to count regardless, and no salary (savings $5 mil), '14 would carry the total $6.4 mil left. (I have him down for $5.75 mil + 250K bonus in 2014, all of it saved).

That's not an unreasonable way to do it - if you believe DW is one of the one or two must-cut players and that lightens the load a bit. IF the next GM really wants to slash and burn (part of me really hopes not), then it wouldn't cost that much to let him go all on next year and move a different contract or two back to '14.

And HTF do you fall behind in the Depth Chart to a guy (Stewart) averaging 3.5 yards per carry?

That is a pathetic output for a RB who just himself signed a 5 year, 36.5 million total, 22.5 million guaranteed contract extension.

DWill's contract also has less guaranteed money than Stewarts, 21 million to 22.5.

The Panthers "brain thrust" at this point is little more than a wet fart.

I'm sorry but how on Earth can any of us make that determination? Our backfield so far this year has been ignored to the point of lunacy. Neither back, especially DWill, has been given enough work on proper NFL run plays to show that.

Sadly, tougher to do wight now because the OL is in lousy shape and Williams just isn't a 'be his own blocker' type like Stewart can be.

Fix the OL and the playcalling then it makes perfect sense to keep him.

Since it seems pretty obvious that Deangelo won't be back with the team next season, I'm hoping we trade him now and get something for him instead of just cutting him.

Also, I have Stew and DWill on my fantasy team as I figured if either got hurt, the other would be a great fantasy play, trade DWill now and I have two more startable RB's, would be nice, hahaha

Thanks!! So in essence we would be paying $9.6 mill in dead money next season but then be freed of his contract? If so, that sounds good to me since we're not using him at all.

We would not be paying anything next season. The $9.6M is merely the unamortized portion of his signinng bonus that would be accelerated against next year's cap.
