Cam's Footwork in Pictures

Maybe they are looking for a student who is willing to learn?

He was mighty willing to learn from Weinke.

Everyone on this forum bashes the poo out of Chud, Rivera, and the rest of the staff. Everyone except them could see that read option bullshit was not working.

Do you think the players are too dumb to realize this too? Several guys have already made some not very thinly veiled comments basically calling out the coaching staff for being morons. It wouldn't surprise me if the majority of that locker room has simply tuned these fools out. Everyone in that locker room knows this staff is gone at the end of this year if not sooner and the same may be true for some of the players as well. They're just going through the motions this year as an audition for next year, either for the new staff or the other 31 teams in the league.

It actually does look like he's on the move in those last two shots. Doesn't take away from how bad the footwork shown is, though. For one, why is he on the move?

And to be honest, it's not just screens that give him trouble. It's most short passes, especially toward the middle (he tends to be better throwing to the outside). That's one of the reasons for the poor performance in the red zone. Those medium out routes he likes are easier to defend down close.

Seems pretty certain opposing teams have picked up on that too. They know once we get close they can concentrate primarily on defending the run because the pass isn't as much of a threat.

Does coaching play a role here? Yeah, but you can't put it all on the coaches. Especially not when you consider that he actually looked better in this department often times last year. He still has to do the work.

My guess would be they thought they had that issue taken care of so they started working on other things, but then didn't notice that the footwork problems were creeping back into the picture. That sort of scenario is the fault of both player and coach. And of course, poor protection up front plays a role here too.

I really think a proven QB guru like holmgren or Reid coming in would do wonders for him honestly

We need to bring in a proven QB coach. At this point Cam should know that his big arm and mobility is not enough. I do believe the coaching staff is not a good fit for him. I don't think he is the QB we need but I will reserve ultimate judgement until I see how he plays under a new coaching staff.

I was never an NFL QB, (But I played one on TV).

But seriously I played a little QB in High School (mostly RB, LB, and CB) and got a little coaching on footwork. My opinion of Cam is that he is a tall guy with a lot of "strength" I dont mean what most people consider "arm strength" when talking about QB's. I mean that since he likely grew up tall and strong he originally learned to throw using arm, i.e. upper body, alone. That is fine (not pretty) but fine in high school and college (if your strong enough) until you get to the NFL and people move faster. The Golden Calf of Bristol is experiencing the same thing.

I think Cam is unique in that he was a generally accurate passer coming in to the league who may have had weak mechanics. ( I wont say poor, I dont think it is that bad.) However after being coached by NFL coaches his velocity went through the roof (I remember hearing Ron speak about it, as well as watching balls zip threw receivers hands on in cuts last season). When you combine raw upper body strength with proper footwork you get balls that you come out and sometimes climb (sail). With time and proper coaching he will find a balance.

But what I see is that he is the most accurate when he doesnt worry about footwork and just throws the ball, i.e. his deep passes on the run. He has the raw strength to get the ball almost anywhere on the field.

Not nearly as bad and as frequent as cam's. Not even close.

I know they are just highlights but I watched some youtube of him from last year to see if this was something he just got away with and sure enough...he's throwing off his back foot and completing passes 20-30 yards downfield. It's not something that he does every time though. Interestingly enough...when he's in the pocket and it's close to collapse he throws off his front foot because he is so damn tall that he really doesn't lose a whole lot when he stands in. The problem is when he is out of the pocket (which is frequent).

People need to realize that this kid has played TWO full years of competitive football at the highest levels. He didn't get the benefit of being Andrew Luck, Eli or Peyton Manning, Ben Roethlisberger etc...who got to play 3 years of college and by their second season in the NFL had 4+ years of high level QB play. Cam is roughly 2 years behind that curve and it's showing.

But this crap can be corrected and if the right people are brought in then it will be corrected. If the organization continues to ignore it and people continue to think that he's just another bust then that's what he will be. But this isn't freakin rocket science and he's not going into brain surgery tomorrow. It's football...he seems like he has the work ethic so put the people around him to develop his skills and he will be as great as we thought he'd be last year. Kid's not a fluke...he made some great throws.
