Direction I'd like to see this team go...

Let's face it, we could make a good argument for a free or strong safety, a CB, a 1-tech DT, a RG, and a WR.

And never forget the high value positions, LT and DE, should there be someone outstanding when we pick.

Well the good news(or bad news) is that we have so many holes that we can go any direction really.

The sad thing is...some of our best players are getting old and will need to be replaced as well(like Smith)

Smith REALLY needs to be converted to slot and have a true #1 take his place, that could add some years to his play.

i stil think the optimum way would be to fill any holes that exist with vet talent just to get more experience in here. use FA or trade draft picks (picks after the 2nd round) to acquire that talent and then go BPA in the draft.

the contractual mess hurney left is going to make it really difficult to do much more than acquire talent in the draft. it's going to be really hard to do much more than that.

i can kind of understand the thought process behind structuring contract extensions the way he did if the primary way of getting talent was going to be thru the draft. by the time rookie contracts will be up for extension, most of the cap hits would have had heir effect and there'd be more room to make the extensions you need to make and rookie salary limits make i easier to work out the big deals for your "core" players. i don't like it at all, but at least it's easier to understand why.

We really need DTs, CBs, Ss and WR/TEs going forward.

That is what I want to see. I also am not opposed to parting with Smith. He is aging, represents the past, and I think a real fresh start wouldn't involve him. Most people can't wrap their hands around that....

Roster needs to be gutted. Big time. Should of happened post Fox with a new GM. Hunrey pretty much drafted Cam and said Fox's core would remain our core.....that has hurt.

So are you thinking that him staying, even if he was reverted to the slot, would be an issue? As in he would demand the ball or whine?

Could have some merit. It's hard to tell when Smith is being detrimental for me since I am such a fan of his.

Smith has always and will always being his own unique problems to the table.

Don't see how a fresh start involves him. If he was quiet, wanted to make others better regardless of circumstances like an aging Jerry Rice I'd say keep him around.....but he isn't that type WR.

Smith era should end. Kinda of like coaches.....I just think his time here is over. Good run. Better for both parties that way.

Im not against it , but I dont really like it either. Just me though.

I really think that if Star or Hankins is there, we have to take one of them. Im tired of every year that we keep on passing up on a DT and every Draft is like Deja Vu where everyone has us taking a DT and we dont. Its time we fill this big gaping hole next year if Star or Hankins is still there. If they're not, then sure Im all up for the idea of taking a cb, fs, then ss.

And I have said in my very first mock draft that I wanted Mcdonald and Elam, that Godfrey could be upgraded. FS is a must, but Godfrey is also a very very average SS. I wouldnt mind us cutting Godfrey (very possible) for a rookie like Elam.

But with your idea, I'll go:

(1) Banks/Amerson/Rhodes

(2) McDonald/Lester/Vaccaro

(3) Elam/Jefferson/Swearinger

DT (FA): Starks, Dorsey, Melton, Branch, Sopoaga

Godfrey will either be cut or forced to restructure after next year.....another one of Hurney's bad contracts.

Yea. But at the time, I liked it. I thought that he was going to really take a big step forward, but he proved me wrong. Godfrey is a very mediocre player that cannot cover any ground. He has become a better tackler in the box but thats pretty much it. Well when you need a safety, you dont draft a cb and convert him into a safety or should you draft a safety(sherrod) and try converting him into a cb. Shouldve took Sean Smith.
