Bad play call that has been overloooked.

The long pass to Smitty in the end zone on 2nd & 8, with a little over 2mins to go, was even worse. We were already in field goal range, and one more 1st down would've pretty much ended the game. You don't pass the ball at that point in the game.

We were in the exact same situation against the Saints at home last year, and on 3rd & 2 we throw a deep pass to Smitty. SMH

It's like Chud doesn't learn from his mistakes. SMH

Lets see:

Your quarterback is completing 71% of his passes on 1st down

He is completing 53% of his passes on second down.

He is completing 43% of his passes on 3rd down, including an incredibly bad 38% on 3rd down and 3-7 yards to go...

Guess what you do???

You stay aggressive on 1st down in an attempt to keep your offense out of obvious passing situations.

Chud called a very good game yesterday. The inability to convert on 3rd and medium distance is just killing this team...

Now go ahead and start hurling the insults and telling me how stupid I am for bringing up "meaningless stats"...

This forum, if nothing else, has great entertainment value.

Nobody said not to pass. It is the out-route that is in question. Have you even read the thread?

Yes I have read the thread.

There is nothing dangerous about that route unless the DB is all over it and in that case you continue in your progressions and go somewhere else with the ball.

It is ultimately the quarterbacks decision where to go with the ball.

I am not so sure that ball is not picked even if Smith doesn't fall down.

Newton was nearly picked in the 1st quarter on the same route...

For years, John Fox would get a lead and go super conservative as far as play calling. And everyone hated on him for it. So at least it's a change from that, fwiw...

except that rivera went safe and conservative on defense.

btw...just read some sorenson article talking about how rivera doesn't make any adjustments but that was something that fox did better than anyone else. made me laaaauuugghhh.

The problems I had with the play was

1 why was he in the shotgun instead of under center where the run pass

Option is more believable.

2 why make it a timing route. It takes away a qb chances to not throw the ball.

The QB is set on getting the ball to a area on time that any slip can cause a int.

Funny to me how at least once per game Cam can bootleg out of a fake handoff and gain 5-10 yds.... but its never late in a game when we're trying to kill a clock?

If the opposing D thinks/knows you're trying to run out the clock, its almost the perfect play - they will jump the fake almost every time.

I'm also appalled that other teams pitch a sweep to an I formation - but we must always hand it off with no lead blocker?

How is it that every other team in the league can check down to a back over the middle, but we can only do it to the flats?

Why do we Armanti Edwards, but you never see him in the Wildcat where the D would have to respect the pass threat?

How come we never ran a reverse?

I have so many questions about this coaching staffs vision and planning - its like we pack a suitcase with just X number of plays and leave the rest of the book in the bldg?

What?

Scoring a TD in that situation would have very likely won the game.

I understand that the coaches are to blame for a lot of our problems but just don't get some of the complaints.

If we sit on a lead and run the ball then people complain that we are playing "not to lose". But if they get more aggressive and try to move the ball through the air, then it's a dumb play call. It's like they can do nothing right.

I think the coaches are to blame, yes. But a lot comes down to execution and we can't overlook that.
