Your ideal consultant?

Mr. Scot

Recommended Posts

Might seem like a tough thing to answer, but that question actually becomes a whole lot easier to figure out once you answer this question...

Who do you want as our new GM?

If it's someone from the Giants like Marc Ross or Kevin Abrams, then you should be hoping for Ernie Accorsi in the consultant role.

Want a guy from Cheeseland like Russ Ball or John Dorsey? Then Ron Wolf is your man (bear in mind his son Ron works for the Packers too). Andrew Brandt would be an option here as well.

Hoping to pull from the Steelers or Eagles? Executive Director of BLESTO Scouting Tom Modrak has been a successful part of both. Modrak might himself be considered as a GM option, but if Richardson wants someone who's never been a GM before (and that's consistent with his MO) then Modrak is a way more likely choice for consultant than GM.

Think the AFC West is the place to look? Who knows the AFC West better than former Chiefs GM Carl Peterson?

So who do you want helping the Panthers find their guy?

I'd be very happy with either Accorsi or Wolf and think both could be objective enough to recommend someone outside the Giants' and Packers' organizations should there be a better candidate elsewhere. Both of these guys know what it takes to build a successful organization, and they have the experience and confidence to give it to JR straight, rather than just what he wants to hear.

Peterson would be okay, but I far prefer Accorsi or Wolf.

I want a consultant who does his analysis and finds the best candidate. I don't care to make a decision who I want as a GM and then choose the consultant who is most likely to suggest the guy I want. In that case save the time and just go after the GM

not that the eagles are the standard of success or anything or that what they've done the past couple of years has worked, but i love what they were able to do to that roster with those vet players brought in and still be in better shape cap-wise than us.

they are living proof that being big players in FA and trying to build some kind of dream team isn't a guarantee for success, but even with that they've made some incredibly impressive moves.

i don't know what that has to do with modrak...i was just thinking about what the eagles put together.

i don't know why the AFC West would be the place to try and find a GM considering how bad they've been for years.

i think aside from someone working with the ravens, i'd like to stick to NFC circles. seems like they have been the better put together teams for several years now.

i like andrew brandt a lot, but i don't know how well he'd do as a consultant. i like him just because i'm more familiar with him than other potential prospects than other guys. that isn't necessarily a good thing.

You mean he won't be looking for another sportswriter?

But seriously, why would a current GM with a very successful organization even consider either a lateral move and/or a move to a lousy organization like the Panthers?

They wouldn't, but an Assistant GM or a Director of Player Personnel might jump at the chance to be the guy running the whole show.

Modrak and Brandt both have a bit of a disadvantage in that they're already currently employed. You have to wonder whether they'd really be able to be away from their current jobs long enough to effectively do the consultant's job.

Guys like Accorsi, Wolf, Peterson and Charley Casserley, on the other hand, have plenty of free time.

That's not what the organization will do, but in this thread that's what we can do.

As far as the consultant goes, who you know is often huge in the NFL. And it's just human nature that, though they might try to be objective, whomever gets the consultant job is likely going to favor people and organizations they know and/or have worked with before.

For the consultant role? Andrew Brandt would be an awesome option. I think Mike Holmgren would be, as well, as long as he wasn't staying on for the job.

What if Cowher was brought in for the consulting job? :o

Then Omar Khan gets the GM job

Cowher's another guy who's currently employed, so he's probably too busy to do what the Panthers need.

True.

And honestly, I don't think I would mind if Khan did get the job. The Steelers have built a consistent winning franchise by not overvaluing players (see most recently: Mike Wallace). However, what worries me about the Steelers organization (as well as the Ravens' organization) it seems like all of the really high-level players are older players, and there's almost no infusion into the team by rookies.

Take out Casserly's name then also, as he is just as occupied as Cowher, just with a different network.

I, for one, am thankful for that.

Thought he was unemployed. Saw something that said he works for NFL Network but didn't see what he does. Haven't seen him on there myself so I don't know what his role is now.
