Mike Lombardi has 'inside info' on why Hurney was fired

i think y'all read something differently than i did.

i don't see it as richardson wanting someone gone...just him wanting us to make personnel moves in getting more talent in here. sure, someone would have to be released to make that happen, but i didn't really see it as focusing on people to let go.

i also didn't read it as hurney falling on the sword for rivera either. i saw it as hurney wanting to continue to stay away from FA and maybe not get rivera players he wanted or upgrade at positions he wanted and hurney's reluctance is what finally got him the axe. maybe it was with chud and/or mcdermmott (and i'm not convinced that the improvement in the D this year was because mcD turned things around, rather it's rivera having more of a say in what's going on like he said he would this year).

just a lot of reading between the lines that we will probably never know or at least won't know until much later.

right now i'm just going to take it at face value that JR still wasn't happy with how the team was put together and that hurney was more just trying to stick to his "plan" and wasn't as aggressive as JR probably thought he should be and JR did what he did with fox, give him just enough time to see if things could work out the hurney/fox way and when their way didn't bring the wins JR wanted then richardson decided it was enough.

How could you not see it as JR wanting someone gone, when it says Hurney saved a few peoples jobs? Also I doubt it was in relation to having Hurney cut someone and got out a sign the best available player on the street right now.

I think he was the fall guy. It was meant to be a message to the coaching staff. They have twice had 10 or more days in between games and much didn't change with the offense. Now after the firing there is a sudden change in the offensive philosophy. It’s nothing like a little fear to get the message across. I think Rivera was clueless with what to do with the offense and allowed a stubborn Chud to tinker with a offense that everyone assumed would be well above average based on last year’s results. I know it has probably been said plenty of times before but with last year’s offense and this year’s defensive improvement we would have been 6-1 and the talk of the NFL.

I'm with rayzor... I think it was about personnel moves JR wanted Hurney to make that would have deviated from "the plan". Hurney refused and JR gave him a pink slip.

Can't make personnel moves without somebody being gone though. The roster is a zero sum game. And it couldn't just be depth chart arrangement because Hurney has no say in that.

Would have to be something Hurney had power over, and that means personnel. Even the firing of assistants would go through Rivera.

Well, I've changed my opinion... at the end of Lombardi's write up it said:

Hurney saved a few people with his actions, but if the Panthers don't start winning, there will be no one left to save the coaching staff.

So it's clear that the changes JR asked Hurney to make involved coaching staff... we can only speculate as to which members of the coaching staff it involved.

If JR wanted to fire Rivera, I think he would have done it right after he fired Hurney, so given our current struggles I'm left to conclude that it was Chud and I bet Rivera saved Chud's job when he talked to JR by promising that we would start running a more conventional offense.

See above. If somebody comes on board, someone else has to leave.

And if it were just a scrub in question, why would Hurney put his job on the line?

If he wanted Chudzinski out, he'd have gone to Rivera, not Hurney.

I'm pretty sure it was Rivera. I already came up with a theory about CJ going to JR about it per his statements to the media about the "GM isn't coaching." He expected coaches to be fired the day Hurney was let go, per his statements.

That being said, I could see JR using Hurney's firing as 'the dangling carrot' to Rivera and his staff. Basically, JR could've laid it out there and said "This guy didn't want to let you go because he believed in you. The job isn't getting done, so someone had to go - it was him. Now it's all on you. Get it done with the rest of this season or you're all gone, like you should've been had Hurney not stepped in for you." I'd imagine it wasn't quite that dramatic, but something like that, lol...
