Mike Lombardi has 'inside info' on why Hurney was fired

maybe there is. it's not like we've got great players at every position. the team hasn't given up yet and some players that the team were taking a shot on probably didn't pan out like they hoped so maybe they try someone else.

most players on the team are easily replaceable by any number of guys in FA. why not make a few changes and see if you can make things better.

there is a point to making adjustments to the roster at this point in time if you're a team hoping that you can still make a go of it and have a winning season. what's the harm in trying?

Ehh, I can't really get behind that this year. Now, if you're talking about guys we let get by before the season like Jacoby Jones, then I'd get it. But guys are street FAs now for a reason, other teams aren't signing them either.

I could see if JR was telling him to make trades, but I just don't think FAs was his problem.

What happened last Sunday is pitch perfect picture of whats wrong with this team. Last week our 80 mill RBs didnt do jack crap. Meanwhile Vincent Jackson had 170 yds receiving and 2 TDs. It goes back to Hurney avoiding FA like the plauge. If we signed VJax with Cam throwing him the ball, we would be in so much better shape.

Most likely its chud job. The offense is the only thing different from last year that could be changed in the season but hasnt ...... until hurney was fired. I havent seen any other changes that would impact the team on the w-L so far.

its just a mess all the way around. the offense is anemic and predictable and the d, while playing much better, has so little talent.

i expect a totally brand new coaching staff next year adn if we can hit a homerun with a GM then we might do better.

personally i am stunned the team as a WHOLE has regressed this bad.

PTrain, I actually agree with you about this one. Seeing our expensive backfield underutilized in a crappy scheme made me cringe as I kept seeing VinnyJ stats flash across the ticker. Gross mismanagement of the cap and an inexplicable fear of free agency. VinnyJ was a pipedream anyway, but there is no denying that the DWill money could have gone to better use. I get we needed him to help Cam in his rookie year, or at least I can understand the logic behind that, but he should have been franchised while Kalil got the immediate long term contract. But hindsight, right?

Okay I know shameless self-promotion or unnecessary "I told you so's" are unpopular to hear,but...... I fugging told you guys to keep an eye on Lombardi and Bucky Brooks

I took a mild amount of heat for it too.

I read a lot of Lombardi's and Brooks' analysis of players and front offices. I don't often agree with Lombardi but he is rarely entirely off base and he definitely has an inside track with the front office. He also almost never mentions Carolina for some reason but lately has been chiming in with more than a sentence or two. I doubt very seriously this means he is gunning to be our GM, but hey who knows. As far as Brooks is concerned he actually was friends with Hurney, was around and worked for him during the superbowl year and would definitely have talked to him personally about this situation.

I could see if JR was telling him to make trades, but I just don't think FAs was his problem.

i think it was part of the problem. i'm thinking it was pretty much that JR saw about as much as he could handle of hurney's building plan and his reluctance to deviate from it and that loss after the bye...at home...against the cowboys in front of a very cowboy friendly stadium was about all he could handle.

i think there's some people that hurney could have called up to help out at CB when we knew that gamble wasn't going to be playing and there's probably some changes elsewhere that could have helped, but hurney didn't make much in the way of moves. i mean what did we do to bolster the OL when kalil went on IR? shuffle the guys we have? where was the sense of urgency in trying to find the best FA out there? (not that we've really done anything differently since hurney was gone anyway). was there any effort to try and trade for someone?

i think hurney just had a lot more "just stay the course" than richardson could put up with anymore.

it could have been players. it could have been coaches. it could have been both and it probably was.

either way...it really doesn't matter. it's now up to rivera to see what he can do to turn this ship around and honestly i hope that he can. i hope he can get the players he wants/needs and use them in the right way. i hope that he can get the most out of his coaching staff and that he can make whatever adjustments need to be made there.

i want rivera to succeed, not because i'm a fan of his, but because i'm a fan of the panthers and i don't really care who is the coach or whatever. i don't care how he acts or how much he yells. the only thing i care about is if he can get this team winning and regardless of how little faith i or anyone else has in this season being salvaged, i hope that it can and i'm just going to sit and wait and see what happens without trying to predict poo. i'm also not going to rule anything out this year either. i'm just in wait and see mode.

Yeah I totally believe that Mr.Richardson basically told Rivera that the team is his for the rest of the year to do as he wants and that if they improve and get better he will stick around if not adios.

I agree....I do not think anyone is off the hot seat at this point

Yeah, it could have been both, but I'm convinced that it was something to do with the coaches, especially if guys like CJ, whom JR is paying a lot for, came to him and complained about them. I'm under the impression CJ did say something to JR because he even said the day Hurney was fired that he expected changes to come but that wasn't what he expected and then said "GMs aren't coaching."

That plus the obvious blunders that were a direct result of poor coaching/decision making are what leads me to believe that.

It's possible that not making certain moves regarding players or FAs is the reason as well, but I have a hard time seeing that because I can't think of anyone marginally better that we could pick up. If he wanted FAs, why didn't JR push for it when it mattered in the offseason?

I've also always been under the impression that Hurney was frugal and rarely spent money in FA because that was JR's approach. I don't think JR would fire him for doing what he's always wanted to him to do.

I do agree that he must have been incredibly pissed after the loss to the Cowboys and someone was going to pay for it.

As far as Rivera, I pull for everyone when they come on board just the same - because they're Panthers. That is until they prove to be inept at their job. And to me, over 22 games, Rivera has proven that is the case. We'll see what he does these last 10 games, but he'll basically have to get us into playoff contention for me to advocate him staying on here. Up to this point, he's been horrible, IMO, and I wanted him to be the guy. I believed he would be the guy and really wanted him to be everything he said he would be in his introductory presser, but he has pretty much been all talk.
