Now that Hurney's been fired, have you re-evaluated how you felt about him?

Alot of people here keep saying that "if this team plays to it's potential, it can be good". If this team has that much potential, then Hurney must have drafted some pretty good players...which means it should have been someone else getting a pink slip...IMO

You will not hear that from me.

We literally have no talent on the right side of the OL. No one outside of Smith who scares people at the WR position. And Smith still scaring people can be argued. We have 0 talent at the DT position. We are average, at best at DE. We have no one outside of Gamble at the CB position. We have nothing at all at the S position. If we lost Gross......

All this talent that people talk about is not there. The cupboard is bare folks.

Yep. We have one of the worst rosters in the league. And with no cap space and aging cornerstones like Smith, Gross, and Gamble it may be getting worse before it gets better. Cam is literally the only thing keeping us from being the most hopeless franchise in the league.

Our best young players are Stew, Kalil, and Cam, and Cam needs to get right, and get to work.

Beason is busted, Gamble, Smith, and Gross are all ageing out of their positions, and after that pretty much nothing. Olsen, maybe, just maybe, but he is certainly not elite talent.

i'd throw keuchly in there as well as being one of our best young players. he just may be the best player on defense.

He made like one or two good moves in the past few years, failed to address key positions year in and year out. Failed horribly in signing this coaching staff, which i personally believe were spur of the moment signings anyways. A myriad of things have made this guy a HORRIBLE GM, and hes been getting by on his mediocrity for far too long. Now, the firing was odd because of the timing.

Rob Rogers is the Panthers contracts negotiator and cap specialist. Has been for years.

Add another reason to why Hurney should have been fired long ago. Inability to hire qualified individual to oversee contract negotiations and team cap.

If Rob Rogers isn't pounding the pavement NLT the first day our new GM has been on the job, take it as a sign that we have hired the wrong GM.

Don't be surprised if he IS the next GM ;)

Pretty sure a lot of people simply bought into some of the things he was doing simply because people here have a tendency to think "well, he must be good because he's in that position". I do believe that there was significant influence on how the franchise was run by JR, but on a more general level. I don't think Richardson has the stamina to be heavily vested in fine-tuning the contracts that were drawn up or the rigors of the drafting process. The "core" that Richardson kept saying was invaluable to the team and needed to be kept was both scouted and drafted under the watch of Hurney. I don't think Richardson watched hours of App State film and said, "that guy right there Marty, we need to trade up for him". I think we need Richardson to step down from making general demands for our front office to fill and let the next guy do his thing, but that raises another question. Has Richardson taken more involvement of the team in recent history because he didn't have confidence in Hurney?

To the people whom I've argued with that are afraid of my constant reminding in the future, just be honest. I don't want to rub it in your face in the future if you can admit that the guy wasn't very good at what he did. As a principle, I don't like to give credit to someone who isn't performing well enough to deserve it, and really, neither should you. If you feel disappointed like "why did we fire Hurney?" well this isn't a league where everybody gets to keep their jobs no matter how bad they are at it and you just wait until you accidentally win a Superbowl one year. You don't really believe that Hurney was just a contracts guy and that Jerry made all of those specific personnel-level decisions, do you?

The guy has been awful for years. He loved trading high draft picks for guys he thought he had to have, but those guys never panned out. Just think of who we could have gotten if we had kept those picks instead of trading them to draft Everette Brown and Armanti Edwards. Also, his massive contract extension for Jake after that horrendous playoff game in 2008 was incomprehensibly stupid, and a move I will never understand. I've never been a big fan of Hurney.
