Now that Hurney's been fired, have you re-evaluated how you felt about him?

Pretty sure a lot of people simply bought into some of the things he was doing simply because people here have a tendency to think "well, he must be good because he's in that position". I do believe that there was significant influence on how the franchise was run by JR, but on a more general level. I don't think Richardson has the stamina to be heavily vested in fine-tuning the contracts that were drawn up or the rigors of the drafting process. The "core" that Richardson kept saying was invaluable to the team and needed to be kept was both scouted and drafted under the watch of Hurney. I don't think Richardson watched hours of App State film and said, "that guy right there Marty, we need to trade up for him". I think we need Richardson to step down from making general demands for our front office to fill and let the next guy do his thing, but that raises another question. Has Richardson taken more involvement of the team in recent history because he didn't have confidence in Hurney?

To the people whom I've argued with that are afraid of my constant reminding in the future, just be honest. I don't want to rub it in your face in the future if you can admit that the guy wasn't very good at what he did. As a principle, I don't like to give credit to someone who isn't performing well enough to deserve it, and really, neither should you. If you feel disappointed like "why did we fire Hurney?" well this isn't a league where everybody gets to keep their jobs no matter how bad they are at it and you just wait until you accidentally win a Superbowl one year. You don't really believe that Hurney was just a contracts guy and that Jerry made all of those specific personnel-level decisions, do you?

I believe Hurney was a dead man walking since 2010, those terrible drafts, letting Peppers go without getting something his worth. Hurney's bad outweighed his good. It was time to move on, and truth be told it was time to move on after 2010.

I supported Marty as long as possible, just as I supported Rivera as long as possible. Generally, that's what most fans do. Like most, the signings of DWill, CJ, Beason, et al caused me to do a double take, but I was still willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. Earlier this year we had one of these threads, and I think my rating was a 5 on a scale of 1 to 10.

As this year unfolded, it became increasingly apparent that there was a major disconnect between Marty's vision and the game plans on Sunday. I had some questions in my mind about Rivera at the end of last year, but not enough to make me ready to throw in the towel. As the year has progressed, it's become apparent to me that Ron is in way over his head and wasn't ready to be an NFL head coach. Since he was a Marty hire, that just added to the problems that were beginning up to overwhelm anything good he ever did.

So for me, it has been a constant evaluation and re-evaluation process with the end result that there were no questions in my mind that he had to go.

That said, I still think Rivera shoulders more of the direct blame for the record ytd. While we lack talent in many areas and have too many overpaid players, there is still enough talent on this team to win more than we have. It's too bad there wasn't a viable option for an interim coach, because in my mind, Ron should have gone right along with Marty.

I mean, the Peppers thing, ....Peppers really fuged up the entire organization's ability to do anything that would limit the loss by refusing to cooperate.

I'm not understanding why we just couldn't have tagged him and traded him for a 2nd. It's not like he has a choice.

re-evaluated? i wanted him fired since he decided to give delhomme a big contract after the arizona playoff game. wtf was he thinking? he then lets peppers walk for nothing, and then he squandered draft picks on everette brown and edwards which enforced me wanting him gone. he followed that up with ridiculous sized contracts for core players from a 2-14 team. there is way more to criticize him for but its time for me to go to bed.

there is nothing to re-evaluate. he shouldve been fired a LONG time ago.

I wanted him gone too when Fox left. We all knew the Jake contract was a mistake. But when JR decided to keep him around, I thought it would be appropriate to give him a fresh slate to see what he could do on his own.

That obviously didn't work out.

Because noone was interested on giving up a 2nd in trade for a ONE YEAR contract with Peppers at $20.1M (plus another $1.5M for a pro-bowl).

We did get a 3rd rounder for the release, there is no way anyone would have given up more than that.

My take on Hurney:

Drafting: Pathetic (especially the trade up for future higher picks)

Signing players with expiring rookie deals: Bad

Finding contributing veteran trades for lower picks: Mediocre

Cap managment: Excellent

All in all: On his incompetence level.

7-9

11-5

7-9

11-5

8-8

7-9

12-4

3X NFC South Champions, 2 NFC Championship Games, Super Bowl 38 loss...

That is what Hurney made of the 1-15 team he inherited in 7 seasons. He did a damn good job.

JR killed Hurney when he gutted the team after '09. Nobody would recover from the mess JR forced into his lap. JR threw away 3-4 years of our teams future over pennies fighting for the NFL brass. Hurney should of been let go with Fox.

Hurney has been a dead man walking since he was forced to gut the roster in '09.

    • NFL dot com has Warren ranked as the 4th best prospect on behind Jeanty, Carter and Hunter.  Sorry guys, it's easier to find an above average EDGE guy than an elite TE.   These EDGE guys are all over the place depending on which site you look at who is the better prospect.  In other words, if the experts don't have a consensus, or even close to it, who is EDGE2 behind Carter, then it's a crap shoot.  Warren is the consensus TE1, although Loveland is ranked high too.  I've seen Warren comped to Gronk and Loveland to Kelce.  Gronk was a complete TE and Kelce is definitely more geared to the passing attack. I know we are 99.99% gong defense, I just think we may be forcing it depending on how the board falls.  If Warren is there, the top defender should not be placed above him assuming Graham is gone simply because the emphasis of the draft is to retool the defense. Also, re-upping a TE on a second deal versus an EDGE guy as first round draftees down the road will be much more cap friendly.
