Yep, they had 6 easy wins every year. Same with the Patriots for a lot of years. Its easy to make the playoffs when the rest of your division is complete garbage.

I know Cowher was a great coach and had much success in Pitt. I just don't remember how often a coach with such pedigree has panned out after coming out of retirement and trying to rebuild somewhere else.

If Richardson is going to stick the next GM with Rivera, then the prospect list for our next GM will shrink considerably. No GM wants to be stuck with the incumbent coach whose lack of wins contributed to the previous GM getting poo canned.

At first I would take your statement at face value, but after looking it up, it sounds like a myth to me...look at the other teams in the division throughout his playoff years

1992 Houston Oilers were 10-6, won the divison, and of course lost the comeback game against the Bills

1993 Houston Oilers were 12-4 and won the division

1994 Cleveland Brown were 11-5 and made the playoffs

1995 everyone else was below .500

1996 Jacksonville was 9-7 and made the playoffs, Oilers and Bengals were both 8-8

1997 Jacksonville was 11-5 and made the playoffs

2001 Baltimore was 10-6 and made the playoffs

2002 Cleveland was 10-6 and made the playoffs

2004 Baltmore was 9-7, Cincinnati was 8-8

2005 Cincinnati was 11-5 and made the playoffs

Even during the non-playoff years...

1998 Jacksonville was 11-5

1999 Tennessee was 14-2, Jacksonville was 13-3

2000 Tennessee was 13-3, Baltimore was 12-4 and won the Super Bowl

2003 Baltimore was 10-6

2006 Baltimore was 13-3

I don't want the Panthers just to be better than the past.....I want them to be very good, sometimes great. I want a team who wins the SB and does not fall off the cliff the next year.

here's an old breakdown of Cowher's tenure prior to his last season... Now. I'm not saying he's a bad coach... I think he's good... I just don't think he's as good as he appears on paper. He's as good as jeff fisher or john fox or any of those guys... he just had the benefit of a weak ass division. I wouldn't be horrified if we brought him in, but I wouldn't be elated either. We know exactly the type of team he'd build.

As far as the weak diivsion thing, it's "weak" because the Steelers beat their division foes regularly. Imagine spanking the Falcons, Saints and Bucs 5 or 6 times a year. Cowher, and the Steelers should never have to alibi for taking care of Division foes. It's what you're supposed to do, that and defend your home turf with great tenacity.
