True. But most if those were years when the Browns, Bengala, and Ravens sucked complete ass.

He had a very good record, but you do have to take it in context.

Yep, they had 6 easy wins every year. Same with the Patriots for a lot of years. Its easy to make the playoffs when the rest of your division is complete garbage.

Heck, If Cowher Became Head Coach for us and even got us to the playoffs two years in a row, I would Make a Friggin Statue of his likeness in my CHU! People, who cares if he didn't make the Superbowl every 2 years. The point is, He's been there. And Won. We need a winner. We need fire. Winning breeds winning.

I know Cowher was a great coach and had much success in Pitt. I just don't remember how often a coach with such pedigree has panned out after coming out of retirement and trying to rebuild somewhere else.

It would certainly be entertaining to follow.

If the general belief is that Richardson is cheap then there is little to no chance he will pay for two more years of Rivera's contract in addition to Cowher.

I think we might be stuck with Rivera.

At first I would take your statement at face value, but after looking it up, it sounds like a myth to me...look at the other teams in the division throughout his playoff years

1992 Houston Oilers were 10-6, won the divison, and of course lost the comeback game against the Bills

1993 Houston Oilers were 12-4 and won the division

1994 Cleveland Brown were 11-5 and made the playoffs

1995 everyone else was below .500

1996 Jacksonville was 9-7 and made the playoffs, Oilers and Bengals were both 8-8

1997 Jacksonville was 11-5 and made the playoffs

2001 Baltimore was 10-6 and made the playoffs

2002 Cleveland was 10-6 and made the playoffs

2004 Baltmore was 9-7, Cincinnati was 8-8

2005 Cincinnati was 11-5 and made the playoffs

Even during the non-playoff years...

1998 Jacksonville was 11-5

1999 Tennessee was 14-2, Jacksonville was 13-3

2000 Tennessee was 13-3, Baltimore was 12-4 and won the Super Bowl

2003 Baltimore was 10-6

2006 Baltimore was 13-3

1 SB win in 15 years. 2 appearances. I think we want better than that. remember....did not even make the playoffs in year 15 after SB win.

I don't want the Panthers just to be better than the past.....I want them to be very good, sometimes great. I want a team who wins the SB and does not fall off the cliff the next year.

So, like I said....Cowher, based on his record is ok. I am hoping for better.

So you are expecting Belichik, Coughlin, or Mike Tomlin and anyone else is a letdown....ok then

lolz, just lol.

..623 winning percentage not good enough.

And Cowher never had a QB with the talent Cam has.

Big Ben is close but we're talking his rook and soph year, not now.

It would really suck being in the Playoffs every year.

People, look at the Panthers last 10 years, please.

An excellent Defensive Coordinator.

You do realize Lebeau only was Cowher's DC for 5 years of his tenure in Pittsburgh?

95-96 and 2004-2006.

here's an old breakdown of Cowher's tenure prior to his last season... Now. I'm not saying he's a bad coach... I think he's good... I just don't think he's as good as he appears on paper. He's as good as jeff fisher or john fox or any of those guys... he just had the benefit of a weak ass division. I wouldn't be horrified if we brought him in, but I wouldn't be elated either. We know exactly the type of team he'd build.

read the article... it's pretty interesting.

Good Lord, that article is from 2005.

This was interesting:

It's an interesting question – and an infuriating one in Pittsburgh – and it stuck with us long after our weekly 30-second rendezvous with cleanliness was complete. After all, the Steelers are exactly the type of team the gridiron classicists would have you believe is poised to win each and every year: They regularly boast a great running game and great defense. Both are requisites for Super Bowl supremacy, say the "pundits."

Both factors make Pittsburgh one of the league's most dominant teams in the regular season year after year. In the 13 seasons of the Bill Cowher Era (1992 to 2004), the Steelers have won eight division titles ('92, '94, '95, '96, '97, '01, '02, '04), made nine playoff appearances (courtesy of a 1993 wild-card berth), and posted 10 winning seasons. Their number of division titles is unmatched over that period, while only Green Bay has made more playoff appearances (10).

The Packers, of course, have been blessed with Hall of Fame quarterback Brett Favre, who has been at the helm for all 10 of those Packers playoff teams. Cowher has heroically duct-taped together annual powerhouses with a collection of quarterbacks who, until Ben Roethlisberger last season, failed to impress anybody: Bubby Brister, Neil O'Donnell, Kordell Stewart, Mike Tomczak and Tommy Maddox have all taken snaps and won games for playoff-bound Pittsburgh teams since 1992.

Despite this substandard quarterbacking ensemble, Cowher has managed a rather impressive 132-77-1 regular-season coaching record

I lold when one criticizm was he didn't beat a 12 plus win team that won its division in the Playoffs. How many of those matchups did he actually have?

As far as the weak diivsion thing, it's "weak" because the Steelers beat their division foes regularly. Imagine spanking the Falcons, Saints and Bucs 5 or 6 times a year. Cowher, and the Steelers should never have to alibi for taking care of Division foes. It's what you're supposed to do, that and defend your home turf with great tenacity.

.623 winning percentage regular season

.571 Playoff winning percentage

Yes please.
