In the last 10 years, the Panthers most successful season was 2003 when the team represented the NFC in the Superbowl. They spent $65 million dollars on player expenses, including benefits and bonuses. This also happened to be the lowest number for player expenses in the past 10 seasons.

The most expensive year for player expenses was 2010, when the team spent $148 million dollars. The team finished 2-14. *(note there was no salary cap this year, however in 2009 the team spent $138 million on player expenses when there was a salary cap).

Carolina ranks #15 in team value in the NFL at $1 billion dollars.

I don't know if these numbers account for inflation or not, it doesn't say. That might skew the numbers a bit.
