Panthers expected to hire outside consultant to run GM search

I see what you are saying and I agree with you. I also think that he should have already identified the issue with the organization and already had someone in mind to come in and fix it. I'm not in disagreement about what he's doing, I applaud it. I just think that it looks bad to not already have had a course of action prior to firing your GM early in the season. I'm not the only one that thinks this either.

If it was really that easy, do you think all the companies that have failed over the years would have been able to pinpoint their problems? Why do you think so many businesses that are struggling look for help from the outside to try to right their ship.? If JR knew this answer, he would have fixed the problem after 2010.

How do we not know that the Panthers didn't have a course of action to hire a consultant before they hired Hurney? We can't just assume these things because none of us really know what goes on behind the walls over there.

This is obviously a thread I should have avoided like the plague... I've never ad my words twisted so badly in my life. For the last time I don't disagree with what JR is doing.

Carl Peterson would likely be my first choice, followed by Ernie Accorsi and Ron Wolf.

And to be honest, I'd be more likely to trust Andrew Brandt than papa Gil. Why? The younger Brandt was employed by an NFL front office (Packers) during the salary cap era. Smart as Gil may be, he never worked with a cap, and I'd be less trusting of his evaluation of someone else's cap management philosophy for that reason.

i was hoping that they would do somehting like this because i sure don't trust anyone in the organization right now to make the decision, including richardson.

i just have this feeling that the the consultant might end up taking over the GM job. i hope that doesn't happen.

i have one worry, tho...who's going to decide on the consultant?

Morrison, perhaps?

I said knows how to build a "winning" organization. :)

Actually I was thinking of Joe Gibbs, but he has a pretty full plate right now.

Story was that Gibbs was Richardson's first choice to run the Panthers when they started, but Gibbs turned it down.

I'd probably trust Gibbs more for a coaching search than a GM search. I guess we could het Bobby Beathard, but then that last guy we hired was a protege of his

Wonder if they might give NFP's Mike Lombardi a call.

Wait so are we planning on hiring somebody this season? Or next?

Next.

Florio rightly pointed out that whomever comes in as the consultant will likely already have a list of contacts/cronies/whatever in mind for the job. When you think about it that way, getting the consultant right is even more important than initially considered.

If he wasn't otherwise busy, wouldn't surprise me for Dan Rooney to get a call on this. Not sure he'd be the best idea though (way up in age and has been away from day-to-day football for a while).
