Option, Option, and more Option!

So the option is not gonna work, Carolina Panthers has successfully answered that question for generations to come. Especially considering we had the most optimal offensive weapons to make it work (minus a successful pass-pro scheme). What offense did Chud run in San Diego? Phillip Rivers was pretty good under him and we have comparitively talented skill players on offense. A lot of talk was spit out about how well Derek Anderson did under him as well. Pretty sure we will have some new coaches next year but in the interim how different is the current scheme to the other stuff Chud does and can the team adjust?

It comes down to "will Chud go back to the way games were called last season?" So far, it doesn't look like it. We took at least 30% of our snaps each game last season under center, and now we are almost exclusively shotgun and calling college-level plays.

Bomani Jones on ESPN2 just now said it best: "asking Cam Newton to do absolutely everything". Once we start utilizing a power running game to keep teams honest, receivers come open. It's that simple. Right now, teams can sit in zone or blitz us to death because they KNOW the pass is coming.

It was a fast slippery slope from the "offensive genius" that we had in the offseason to the schmegma we have now. Can Chud just scrap this season's changes and upgrade to last year's playbook? The option worked well last season because we did not center the scheme around it. Its like Chud saw it worked a few times, very well, and changed his philosophy. Get back to basics, then move on....

Wasnt Chud the assistant HC in SD?

It turns out that great game against the Bucs last year, the one where everyone was so excited about, became the death knell of Rivera's head coaching career and our 2012 season. Rivera saw the results from that game (by the way, half the bucs players on that roster are no longer with the team), and wanted to make a name for himself by revolutionizing the league with Cam's skills as a runner. Now it looks like the only thing he succeeded in doing, is messing up Cam's career so far. Guaranteeing Cam has a sophmore slump like no other. Great job Rivera and Chud.
