The Next GM

Mr. Scot

I'd agree. And I'd also look at replacing some of the entrenched people.

no sacred cows.

i have no problem with keeping effective people around.

and no, just being part of a losing culture doesn't mean one isn't good at his job, but it also makes it hard to distinguish the good from the bad.

i remember hearing that after the 2010 season, aside from don gregory the whole college scouting department was rebuilt. it was one of those "quiet" rebuilds. if that is the case, i would have no problem keeping that staff around just based on what they did this last year.

Switched from my iPad to my PC and found search was way more productive.

One tidbit. Just this past year, the Giants cut down on his duties. He was also scouting opponents as well as personnel. They gave him a different title and asked him to focus on personnel only.

A GM with experience scouting opponents is intriguing.

Also of note: GM Jerry Reese refers to Gettleman as a mentor.

i think that could be a useful element.

Speaking of structure, check out this quote...

Early last week, pro scout Matt Shauger, who scouted the Patriots and Ravens in the AFC Championship Game, delivered a 125-page report to Tom Coughlin and staff that provided the template for the Giants’ game plan on Sunday. The cover of the report read: New England Patriots Super Bowl XLVI February 5, 2012 Rosters Depth Charts Injuries Notes.

The report includes matchup advantages and matchup disadvantages, as well as tendencies. “It’s a very thorough document for the coaches to give them a starting point for their preparation, but it’s not X’s and O’s-oriented as much as it is player-evaluation oriented,” Gettleman said.

Think we have anybody on staff who could do that?

That's a sign of a winning organization.

And who knows? This guy Shauger might make a good Director of Pro Personnel.

One other thing...

Gettleman was apparently a candidate for the Chiefs GM job that ultimately went to Scott Pioli. He was also a candidate for the Browns GM position before they hired George Kokinis (bet they'd like a do-over on that).

The most interesting part: The Browns were using a consultant to guide the GM search. The consultant recommended Gettleman be interviewed.

Three guesses who the consultant was...

(Hint here)

Someone that I think Accorsi could definitely take a look at for us is Scott Fitterer from Seattle. He was with the giants from 98-00 and has been with Seattle since 01. He may be staying pat out west though but an interesting name to throw in.

that would be awesome.

if we raid the giants staff, i wouldn't mind him being among the booty we steal.

stuff like that is what puts you just a bit over the top.

That's the short version. Click to get the expanded version and you'll find he started in the league as a college scout and continued in that capacity for 13 years or so. He's worked at both levels. No indication he's worked with the cap though (outside shot he brings Kevin Abrams with him).

I want a proven talent evaluator. Knowing how to spot good young players that will fit your vision is much more difficult than managing the cap. Cap management is largely a mechanical exercise with numbers. Frankly, any accountant worth his or her salt could probably do a fine job with that part of the job. Throw in a good lawyer to help with negotiations and contract legalese, and you're covered.

Does anyone really believe that it was naivete on the part of our cap guy that resulted in us signing all those excessive contracts last year? Marty and JR decided they were going to pay whatever it took to keep our "core" and then gave marching orders to Rogers.

Give me the best football guy we can find and fill in the blanks if he is lacking in the cap area.

I'm guessing it will be Marc Ross, or he'll be our first choice given Accorsi's involvement.

Not sure who else Accorsi has helped place, but Reese was his apprentice and he had ties to Dimitroff from his days in Cleveland. This makes me think that the GM will be someone who has at one time or another been directly associated with Accorsi.

Mr. Scot, what other candidates on this list have some sort of direct association with Accorsi?

Kevin Abrams, the Giants assistant GM.

I think there's at least one or two more, but I don't remember off the top of my head and I'm not where I could look it up.
