The Next GM

Mr. Scot

I tend to favor college scouting guys over pro personnel guys, but yeah, he'd have a shot as well.

I agree with you on this. Dave Gettleman seems like he can be a good prospect but being Senior Pro Personnel he doesn't even travel with the scout team anymore. His job duties is to grade scout team practice guys and unrestricted free agents. I kind of want someone who scouts college guys well.

Dave Gettleman bio from the Giants site

Dave Gettleman is in his 25th season in the NFL, his 15th with the Giants and his first as Senior Pro Personnel Analyst. He spent the previous 13 years as the Director of Pro Personnel. Gettleman joined the Giants in the spring of 1998 as then-director Tim Rooney’s assistant. He was promoted to Pro Personnel Director in the spring of 1999 upon Rooney’s retirement.

Gettleman has been a part of six Super Bowl teams, including three winners. He was with Buffalo in 1990 and 1991, Denver in 1997 and the Giants in 2000, 2007 and 2011. The Broncos and the 2007 and 2011 Giants both won the championship. Gettleman has been associated with 13 playoff teams in his NFL career.

I want a great talent evaluator either way. Someone who would bring in a successful OC for coach would also be ideal. I'm tired of being behind the rest of the league schematically. We need some legit coaching that our guys will respect.

The only way to get that coaching is to bring guys in with strong personalities.

Sounds like a winner but I like my GMs to be from networks... im hiring Michael Lombardi.

Curious real question... Will the next GM get a three year pass or will the huddle want to fire.com him after halftime of Game1 of preseason?

first draft day.

if he doesn't go by mel kipers draft board i say we fire him on the spot.

That's the short version. Click to get the expanded version and you'll find he started in the league as a college scout and continued in that capacity for 13 years or so. He's worked at both levels. No indication he's worked with the cap though (outside shot he brings Kevin Abrams with him).

Might take some effort to dig up more. Cursory web search on him didn't produce much outside his team bio.

Definitely worth a look, but with the source being Florio, also worth a grain of salt.

the more i think about it, the more i want us to bring in a personnel guy and a cap guy. of course i don't have to pay for two people to do what should be one man's job, either.

one thing is clear to me...if jerry wants this team to be a winner and to get him a lombardi before he dies, he's gonna have to open up that check book. that means hiring two people that are great at their job rather than one guy who is good (hopefully) at both.

that also applies to the HC job. gonna have to spend to get someone we can trust to get things turned around.

I'd agree. And I'd also look at replacing some of the entrenched people.

Switched from my iPad to my PC and found search was way more productive.

One tidbit. Just this past year, the Giants cut down on his duties. He was also scouting opponents as well as personnel. They gave him a different title and asked him to focus on personnel only.

A GM with experience scouting opponents is intriguing.

Also of note: GM Jerry Reese refers to Gettleman as a mentor.
