@WCBROYHILL: @josephperson Poor talent evaluation in 2008-2011 draft.34 Picks, Only 14 still w team, 5 starters, This should be the core #HurneyFired.

Ill pass on the appreciation... But from what we've been hearing he's a great dude... I feel bad for him in that respect.

The above tweet captures most of our issues though

I hope he lands on his feet. I would never wish ill on him.

He has had a hand in crippling this franchise and should have been removed from his duties a while ago. With that being said, he has handled himself with a ton of class and never once deflected responsibility. I have a large amount of respect for that quality. Not so much for his talent evaluation or leadership of the team.

Saw marty once at a Charlotte Knights game. Just walking around with some other guy, marty had a beer in each hand. We hung out near him and eavesdropped. He was just shooting it with the other guy. Seemed like a pretty cool guy, and from what I've heard and read, he was.

That said, I thought that he should have been let go when Foxy was shown the door. .

I was trying to decide which was the best draft in Panthers history the other day and since Marty has been here for all but the first few it's pretty much the same question. Anyways, I could not come up with a solid answer, I could see arguments being made for several depending on how you define "best".

I would probably argue that 2001 is the best. It wasn't the best in terms of longevity or lasting impact on the team, but it terms of talent evaluation it was pretty damn solid. Our first three picks that year all became All-Pros:

Round 1 (11) - Dan Morgan

Round 2 (44) - Kris Jenkins

Round 3 (74) - Steve Smith

The three of them have combined for 7 All-Pro and 10 Pro-Bowl selections. They were also three key parts of the only Panthers squad to ever make it to the Super Bowl. The rest of that draft didn't pan out, but IMO the success of the first 3 picks makes it the best in Panthers/Hurney history.

Who wants to take this one?

    • I am still not sure he is the guy. But 263 yards and more importantly, 27 points,  against one of the best defenses in the NFL with relatively little support from the run game and a mostly young raw receiving corps is better than just ok.   While overall I thought Canales did a good job today, I do think we should have run the ball a little more in the red zone.  Six first qtr plays in the red zone, 1 run, 5 passes.  I know KC has an excellent run defense, but still got to balance it out a little better.   In the second half, when in the red zone, they had 4 passes and five runs, and scored td's two of the three red zone trips.
    • I will have to look for more of his content.
    • The problem is, pass rushers go in the first round.  That's what we need the most.  The success rate after the first round has a huge drop off.
