Interesting Rivera News

Surely, I didn't read Belicheat and Ryans names in the same sentence as Rivera? Wow. First off its the poor mechanic who blames his tools. Rivera AND Hurney claimed they "felt good about this team", in pre season. Secondly, if they aren't doing what you want...you correct it or bench them. You don't continually curse grown men. Doesn't work. Lastly, you can't curse them out, when you can't even use time outs correctly.

Tom Coughlin used to be someone that couldn't get it done either. His teams always faded down the stretch and players considered him an overbearing blowhard.

That's the Coughlin I'm comparing Rivera to. He fixed his problems. What's to say Rivera can't?

Yea he may have been overbearing and abrasive, but Coughlin got results early in his head coaching career, Rivera hasn't. Jaguars went to the AFC Championship in their second year of existence under Coughlin....Panthers are making their case for worst record in the league in Rivera's second year.

well...little known fact on this forum...I have some experience as a teacher and a coach (and a player). I know a thing or two about shaming and blaming students/players that don't perform and don't behave.

Reaming students out for having a lack of discipline is a two-edged sword. On the one hand, used sparingly and with tact, letting them know you are disappointed by using a harsh tone or even the artfully place expletive can have a motivating effect.

However, used too often or too forcefully, this kind of tactic can become abusive. Whenever you verbally or mentally abuse people, they usually don't fight back (verbally). However, they will make the judgment that you don't have their own best interest in mind and will learn to cope with the abusive language/ message by ignoring it. That seems to be what this thread is getting at.

If I were to go into a classroom (when I was a teacher) and spend 15 or 20 minutes yelling at students for being disrespectful or lazy, they would internalize that yelling as a sign that I didn't respect them and thus, they would begin to lose respect for me. Regardless of the truth (probably they deserved it) the message would be lost and all they would hear was the negative tone. That is why I made it a practice never to yell at, berate, or chastise a student in front of other students, as much as I would have liked to.

When you verbally abuse a person, the words become meaningless and all they remember is that they hate you.

If the players hate RR, that would explain why they play without discipline. They aren't learning anything from his abusive approach.

The point is (assuming this is true) Rivera is not inspiring the team. A good coach can get the most out of his players. Ron on the other hand has an amazing knack for bringing out the worst.

We say that but.....

But in his first year....

Newton rewrote the NFL record book

Smitty had one of the best seasons of his career

Some argue we had one of the best ground attack in NFL history....one site claimed we were the best.

And his D was starting 3rd stringers

Now this year? I say more than anything....Chud sucks and Rivera needs to learn how to put his finger print on an offense like Fox would. Isn't always bad to do such.

This is not "news." This is one person's opinion. While it may be interesting, it is wrong to call this news.

Agreed. Brooklyn Bully just posted this as a 'heard it through the grape vine' to get attention. He still hasn't responded back to explain exactly where he heard this from and how he knows it's legit.

Yet it's blown up to 10 pages.

It still is (unless you can play). Case in point, Wilson, the LB we drafted last year. Had that happened to a starter, he would have taken his punishment and gone right back on the field. And all of us as fans would have rationalized it.

Character only counts if you're not playing well or if you play for some other team.

I wasn't talkin scrub draft picks...

So... I know I don't do this often, but you should know you can trust me. I was the one who told you Pep didn't "respect" the "coaches"... and he's no longer here. I was the one who first told you Otah would not be a Panther this year... and he is not. My family knows someone on the staff that talks to players daily. Since the players give their trust to this person, I will not name names. Hell, I shouldn't even make this thread. But screw it.

Anyway, this person gave someone in my family an interesting nuggest recently. They said that one of Rivera's approaches toward the players is going poorly. Why? According to the players themselves, Rivera chews them out with an insane amount of profanity all the time. And the players are starting to "tune him out". That ain't good, folks.

It looks like Rivera is doing things behind closed doors, while he's robotic on the field, but he can't seem to do it in a positive way yet.

Profanity is nothing new in the NFL. But I still don't think that constant profanity is really that effective, either. Eventually players just tune out the noise like you said. Also, I think it's possible to be effective yelling without profanity. But from reading some other comments, I don't think the alleged profanity is ineffective because the players get hurt emotionally from getting chewed out. They get that treatment from opponents in each game. I think it's more the fact that if you keep coming back with the same approach - just yelling profanity at people - they realize you have nothing to offer beyond threats, and so the players won't listen to you.

those poor millionaires got there feelings hurt cause coach was yelling at them. Boo Hoo. That is pathetic. My real concern with Riveria is time management, there is no one on staff with previous head coaching experience to help him and our players don't seem prepared.

    • Regardless, Dan overpaid  I like Moehrig but he ended up with the highest contract for a safety. Patrick Jones has no business getting the deal he did. People look at sack numbers and that’s silly. It was the same thing as Wonnum. I went and looked at a few of his sacks and like Wonnum’s he benefitted from being the free rusher on a blitz  It’s so important that they’re smart with their money as we get into Young’s prime years. We got into cap trouble with Cam and I really don’t want to watch that whole story repeat itself
    • The terrifying thing about us drafting an athletic phenom that needs significant development is that it begs the question, how many of our draft picks ever actually develop? Seems like most of our guys are as good as they're going to get on the day we draft them. Hopefully this new staff can reverse that trend but it just seems like we've been drafting highly talented developmental prospects for years now and then completely fail to develop them.
    • So many times I’d rather them just not sign anyone and carry over cap space. We aren’t winning the SB next year. So at this point unless you’re signing an actual difference maker don’t bother  This is why I was fine paying DK 30 million a year. Otherwise they’re just going to burn it on crap anyways. At least someone like DK impacts our entire offense as a whole and defenses game plan for him. I can promise you no one is game planning for Patrick f’n Jones or Tershawn Watson
