My Dog......*sigh* The Digger......

She's only dug out 2 areas as of right now...that are along the fence anyways...Do electric fences really work?

What the proper way to discipline her when I catch her digging?

For our digger dog I put a couple of large paving stones on the ground up against the fence where he liked to dig out. Easier than concrete.

Edit: and wtf? Left in the yard while you were at the bar?? Video poker not far behind. :startle:

had the same issue with my german shepherd and we tried everything listed above....chicken wire, rocks, tied down the bottom of the fence...yadda yadda yadda. Lots of that makes your hard look like crap too.

highly recommend a single strand of electric wire...juiced up with a cattle guard system if you can access something like that in your area. Very similar to the systems they sell for dogs, but it's way cheaper. I don't really buy into the whole cruelty thing...you take them there once and get them zapped while you tell them what it's all about. My dog did it twice by herself after that and within a couple of months, we removed the system and sold it online for about 75% of the price we paid for it. Dog never went anywhere near the fence again. It's a small zap.

For now at least...I kicked as much dirt back in as I could and put 2 bricks along the bottom so unless she digs a whole new hole..she can't get out. I was playing with her in the backyard when I got home..a couple time she took her soccer ball over there and set it down...she didn't dig..but I still sternly told her NO ..I just don't want her going over there at all

Set up a booby trap so every time she goes over there something bad happens.

You can bury blown up balloons where she likes to dig so when she goes to dig the balloons will burst and scare the poo out of her. You can also put her poo in the hole and over the covered hole. Dogs don't like to dig or hang out where they poo.

She's not an attack dog, Z...she's just not used to kids...I won't bring her anywhere with kids ever again...it doesn't help that the 3 times she's nipped at kids, they've been feeding her.. I don't feed my dog table scrapes...who knows...I just know I feel uneasy with her when children are around.

Please remember...she's a RESCUE dog...I have NO CLUE who owned her before me...so I'm learning as time goes by....and children scare her..

Don't feel too bad... our second chihuahua has a personality disorder I think... she's overly protective of my wife and has bitten me and the boys several times due to that... she also has issues after 8PM. She gets grumpy late at night... but fortunately she's only about 12 pounds and her bite is not a big deal and I'm usually fast enough to avoid the worst of it.

Dogs have their things and as long as you know what they are, they're fine... I know not to go over and mess with ours if she's "in a mood" sitting with my wife.

Except for the kids issue...she's great!! She is super sweet and will roll over on her back so quick to get a belly rub from anyone who's willing :) ...it's just the issue with kids...She's great with other dogs and adults..even drunk ones at the bar on the patio. She's fine at the dog bar in NODA and at Barker Lounge where we take her sometimes to play while I"m at work...it sucks b/c every kids that sees her wants to pet her...

My dog is a biter too for the same reason as your chi.

When she's grouchy, she does not bite hard, it's a warning kind of nip thing. Not that makes it any better or an excuse for biting. She gets punished for it, I make her get down if she's sitting with me when it happens. Our kid smothers my dog too much and it aggravates the dog, she will growl to let her know to leave her alone. I do have to be careful with her around other children & people. I wish I didn't. It's my fault though for not properly socializing her.

Dang pumpkintits, I didn't mean to put you on the defensive. She's a sweet dog and you guys are doing the right things with her. All dogs have a penchant for something bad it seems. Take my wifes dog, his mission in life was to bite every man he saw when I met her, now he's just a grumpy old man and he listens very well to me.

Our new puppy likes to dig in soft dirt as well. The solution we did and has worked so far is a combo of a few above. We took some of his poop, put it in the hole, and then mixed cheyenne pepper in the dirt that we filled the hole in with. I have some chicken wire to put under the dig spots if that doesn't work but it seems to so far....fingers crossed.
