I see it as a perfect example of the idea that he is loyal to a fault in regards to his "guys".

i think this is true...but to gain his loyalty you have to be on fire and loyal to the organization. guys he lets go are usually guys that either decided they weren't loving it here (peppers) or guys who were essentially half-assing it (fox and his JR's sons).

if you show loyalty to him he's going to be loyal to you. the '09-'10 house cleaning was just an effort to get the club back on track (that probably didn't go far enough since hurney was kept around). truthfully, in looking at the way JR was/is with greg olsen's situation with his twins (and quite a few others) you can tell that he really cares about his guys...esp. his players. that is probably the most extreme example, but there have been quite a few that showed the depth of his loyalty to his players that wanted to be here. i mean it had such an impact on olsen that he and his wife named the twin that is having heart issues after richardson.

i don't completely trust him to handle the hiring of a new GM or other personnel and football matters. a strength of a good business owner is finding the right guy(s) to make those calls for you. i think he trusts hurney a lot, probably too much, but he trusts him to make good decisions for the team as far as personnel is concerned. i just wish hurney did better.

But you just can't do that as a manager. You can't go to one of your supervisors and tell them not to talk to someone that works for them.

If you have that little faith in the guy that's in the supervisory position (Davidson in this case), then you need to fire them at that instant. You just can't have players going over their coordinator's heads.

I think what he meant by "not talk to him" was really "don't fug with him"

wow so the authority of a coordinator might have been undermined by a player with the owner's blessing

boy are we on the road to hell or what

if it wasn't a coordinator that didn't suck and wasn't on the way out the door anyway, i'd be worried. but it wasn't.

i'd like some context for that heated discussion, but i know that smitty had plenty of reasons to be upset at davidson over the past couple years he was here. first, smitty was getting set up to get killed by the throws coming to him and the offense, esp. where he lined up was so predictable that it had become completely ineffective. then in '10 smitty became an afterthought in the passing game. people loving what gettis and lafell did that year have to take into consideration that if it wasn't for smitty being essentially taken out of the game that would never have happened for the rookies.

After hearing stories like this, you just have to wonder if re-signing DWill and J Stew and Godfrey and Beason and Anderson and CJ were all Hurney's doing.

Would it surprise anyone if JR told Marty, "Do whatever you have to do to keep these guys."

Pretty shitty assumption off of a story with little relevance

I've defended Richardson from the talk about him only wanting to make money and not win. What I won't defend him on is the idea of him making the important personel decisions and only having Hruney as his book keeper. That would be a major turn off. I've feared this for quite a few years now and believe it's the most likely scenerio.

When JR was a relatively unknown quantity within the NFL, he was able to attract some of the best talent in the business to help him construct this franchise from the ground up.

IMO He missed his best opportunity to have a winning organization when he refused to make Bill Polian president.

It has pretty much been a series of bad decisions since then.
