If you heard the whole interview then its been a clear progression with JR to full circle. He started off with a say in the Panthers, then Seiford was giving full control, Then he allowed Fox and Hurney to run the show, and in he is back where he started with a say in the Panthers. The only way he is going to be convinced that what he is doing is wrong is with the failure of his plan.

Also this story seems very true because of what happened this year with Smith. Smith is on a downward spiral and taking shot at Cam and the coaching staff once again does not really make me feel that Rivera is in control.

Guys....My screen name is the night the Carolinas was awarded the franchise. I remember watching from work that night and remember JR saying that he didn't "get into this to lose". Sure , he's a businessman, he cares about the bottom line. It's just hard to belive that he is so dense as to not understand that the fans deserve better.

I'm not trying to split hairs here but what evidence do you have that suggests Marty is a "historically bad negotiator" and "has no unique skill set to offer"??

When players are shocked at how much Hurney offers them to remain in Carolina that means money is being wasted. Money that could otherwise be used to retain other talent or attract new talent in free agency.

The "no unique skill set" is in reference the fact that getting under the cap is accomplished by every team in the NFL, every year. In other words, Hurney's skills are not irreplaceable, he is not a cap genius.

Personally, I think Marty is a good guy with numbers and it's not his fault if they throw an assload of money to a bunch of RBs/LBs because after all, it's the Big Cat who is signing the check.

Hurney is constantly up against the cap, limiting the Panther's options in attracting new talent. It may be the Big Cat's money, but operating on the assumption this team is still trying to win the Super Bowl, Marty is responsible for telling JR that the team cannot afford to continue to misallocate funds for a few aging and often injured players. A good GM would tell JR those funds would be better used to attract the free agents needed for the Panthers to compete in this league.

Bill Polian was on WFNZ yesterday and had nothing but praise for Marty. He said that Marty has been trained by the best and is an excellent GM.

Bill must have gone downhill faster than I thought. Doesn't take much time to look at this team's Win/Loss history and determine Marty Hurney is in over his head. That is assuming we are still holding GMs ultimately responsible for a team's performance after more than a decade in the position.

The issue I have with Marty is his talent evaluation. That, of course, is not entirely up to him but he does have something to do with the scouting and player development.

Agreed, tired of Marty trading away next year's draft picks for projects that never seem to pan out.

Glad to see that Mr.Richardson is finally taking some heat for this losing franchise. What took us so long?

he took a good bit after the 2010 season. it's not like this is the first time people have called him out on things.

granted the criticisms were different at that point, but i think he responded well to them and made a big effort to try and turn things around. he listened to what was being said and did something about it.

i think the same thing is probably going to happen this time around. i don't know how it will shake out, but i'm hoping that the result is a better GM that does a better job of getting good personnel in here without being narrow minded as to where they come from and that this GM does a better job of holding personnel accountable.

fwiw...the comments made by hurney in a couple interviews done early last week sounded like he intended to do a better job managing the coaching staff, realizing that they weren't using the well and the players themselves weren't carrying their weight. maybe hurney and richardson got ahead of this.

only way we can know for sure is how the team comes out of the bye and what they do with the rest of the weeks they have in the season.

we don't know the details of the situation. I know how I'd respond to being yelled at by a supervisior. I'm pretty sure most men wouldn't take it well.

There has been a precipitous decline in Richardson the last four years or so. He used to be sharp as a tack. He picked your brain for opinions and could tell right away what was gold and what was crap. But he understood the value of coming to you and making you feel like you mattered. That fostered loyalty within the organization from the bottom up. As Zod has said on here before, he was country smart. And that's why the other owners in the League put him in charge of the very public labor battle.

That being said, he used to hate Al Davis. Now he is rapidly becoming Al Davis. Doesn't this Smitty/Davidson flap sound like one of the many stories about Davis and the Raiders franchise the last few years he was around? And the way he acted in that press conference a few year ago and his comments during the labor negotiations show a man who no longer is aware of everything.

The man is human. He went through hell with his heart problem. It's just unfortunate that there is no one to keep him in check now that he's in need of that person more than ever.
