Ranking Panther Needs for 2013 Draft

This will be continuously updated.

I usually wait till at least week 8, but fug them they did this to themselves, fuging Hurney.

Anywho.

I will take a general consensus and update opinions as we go through the year.

Your top needs would be 1st/2nd round targets, so first 2-3 slots, and on down.

For me.

DT I

S II

WR I

CB

OT

TE

OG

DE

Tic marks are for rankings.

From the thread.

I think DT will be picked in the 1st round, but I think Safety is the bigger need. Too many good elite DT prospects at the top of the draft, and no elite safety prospects. Safety will be taken in the 2nd.

It'd be very nice to take care of one of the top three/four needs (S, DT, WR or G) in free agency with a QUALITY free agent.

Kenny Philips or Dashon Goldson would be outstanding as far as improving a safety spot. And its not gonna happen but Greg Jennings, despite being nicked up this year, would be a dream. Then they could finally invest in a talented DT in the draft.

Jarius Byrd and Kenny Phillips are both free agents next year. I can see Giants and Bills letting them walk. If Hurney is smart he should be all over them. Remember Byrd was working out with Beason and Stew in that video so he could convince him to come. That way we can use one of the first to picks on a DT or WR. Thing is i would have to put WR over DT in the first because we havent had much luck picking one in the later rounds the last couple of years. Next one we draft is gonna have to be a stud and potential replacement for Smitty. It would be hard to pass on one the top corners to if there available.

agreed...but i'd much rather address all of the most immediate needs in FA or thru trade. DT esp.

the needs that we have in the trenches i just think are too important to spend gambling and trying to develop draft picks. i would rather have someone who is ready to hit the ground running and i trust that with vets more than i do rookies.

i'd like for us to get in a position because of FA and trades that we could draft the BPA without worrying about holes getting filled.

needs for offseason (in order, i suppose)...

FS

NT

UT

SS

RG

WR

TE

my wish is that we'd address NT, UT, SS, and maybe RG in FA or via trade for draft picks after the 2nd round. i'd use the first two picks on FS and WR (not necessarily in that order).

none of that will happen, but thats what i'm hoping. and i don't want any safeties under 6' and no WRs under 6'2. we need some frikkin height there.

Can't say I disagree with that. My thinking is that we address DT with a free agent AND a high draft pick. That way we have a veteran at the position who can hit the ground running as you said and possibly also have a new Kris Jenkins in the system, which would hopefully solidify us in that area for a while. But that's wishful thinking of course.

And honestly, if we were to address S, WR, and maybe corner in the free agent market, I wouldn't mind spending the entire draft on offensive and defensive lineman. Just to get back to basics.

It's time for Hurney (or whoever the GM is by next season) to invest some actual money into a proven starter in this league at a position of need that is coming off of his rookie deal and has developed and made strides each season. I'm done with the optimism that comes with singing one team's backups to compete for a starting role and hoping they somehow manage to turn into a consistent starter in this league overnight. Enough with signing roll players that essentially do just that...play their role. This team needs significant upgrades at important positions and these upgrades need to be impact players from day one.

That being said, and admittedly I'm not too familiar with the free agent market next year at DT, WR, G, or S, we need to sign a relatively young and immediate upgrade at one of those positions. Depending on the position acquired via FA...draft the other 3 in rounds one, two and four. As for the order you draft those positions in... if your BPA is a S, take the safety first. If your BPA is the WR...take the receiver and so on and so forth. In the following rounds, address the positions still with holes with BPA at said position.

I'm hoping it turns out something like this:

Sign proven starter that is still young at DT or Guard and would be an immediate upgrade.

Round one (depending on FA acquisition): Star or Hankins /// Justin Hunter or Keenan Allen

Round two: Best Safety available. No more converting a CB to S.

Round four: Best Guard available.

I think after writing all this out and getting my thoughts down on paper I'd like to sign a DT as our FA...although I'm not too sure what teams have a logjam at that position and could afford to let a young promising defensive tackle get away. From there, get a surefire future #1 WR that can learn under 89 for a year and even move him to the slot by mid-season. Follow that with a safety round two, and a guard round four because I think an early 4th round guard that may have slipped from the earlier rounds has a better chance of being an immediate starter and serviceable from day one more so than any other of our positions of need.

Offseason needs in order for this guy:

1 - FS

2 - WR

3 - DT

4 - CB

5 - DE

6 - TE

7 - OG

8 - OT

But if there is a 1-5 that's obviously the BPA with our first pick, I'd go with him whether be Terrance Williams, Sam Montgomery, or Jonathan Banks.

    • I'd give it a C mainly because of Brooks.  If we just didn't have a 2nd I'd argue B to B+ tbh. Brooks was a bad gamble, tho one that could still pay off long term. Yes XL only has 400 yards but... Look who is throwing him the ball. And I think he isn't a "true #1" but he's been able to consistently get open. Hands definitely need to be cleaned up.  But he should end the year with 500-600 yards. Like you said - Sanders looks great.  Get him a better QB / more time with a QB and I think he's gonna impress. We added a couple rotational players on D that have both made plays and show promise for the future from later rounds. So I'd say, Brooks really hurts this drafts grade. It'll be interesting to see how it progresses over the next 3 years. I've overall really liked Morgan's FA acquisitions, so...
    • Oh he would absolutely flourish. It’s the panthers way. It’s no different with coaches. Sometimes they reach their expiration date, go somewhere else, and find new success.  Similarly to Burns, how long to wait for the light to finally turn on?  Market forces will demand a salary that the panthers can not responsibly match. Sliding him to guard will fit his skill set better, but he has played LT for 3 years. He will receive offers from other teams wanting to pay him LT money.  At guard, he won’t start with what they have paid Hunt and Lewis. Center then?? Dunno. Maybe? He will become a backup by default once they draft their stud LT. I doubt Dan just stands pat. That’s not his MO.  So where does this put him? Can you match what other teams will offer for a backup LT/guard? Do you dish out franchise LT $ on a guy who still needs significant improvement in pass protection. This team will be DOA in the playoffs with the very first team who has a formidable speed rusher. What if he has hit his ceiling in pass protection already and they sign him long term? It’s a big gamble either way.
    • We're in a great position to see just how big of a misstep it would be, having made so many ourselves
