Irvine or Vaughn Martin?

Smashmouth

who would you pick if you were in the war room. back in april. Irvine was our pick in the 3rd. We could have traded down and still selected Vaughn Martin and still got Goodson. Martin is raw but did 44 bench press reps. He is 330 and ran a 4.96 40.

i would have traded down our 3rd rounder for a early 4th. selected Martin and goodson and we would have had an extra 5th or 6th rounder.

but if irvine is a great dt. i will eat my words. I would always take goodson. he is very very talented. but i just like the measurables of martin. and im going to wait to see how irvine turns out

the chargers reached...and martin is gone no use in talking about him

Reached in the 4th...funny.

They needed an athletic 3-4 DE, and that is what he projected to....and then want to move him to NT down the road, as he gets stronger.

He will take a year as a rotational player, the assume a starting role, if he has the goods.

Both of those guys were reaches. DT was extremely thin this year, so teams ended up taking guys much earlier than they should just because of need.

I would have liked to see us trade that 3rd for a 2nd next year, like the Patriots did a couple times. Would really help out since we don't have a 1st rounder next year. Then take Ricky Jean-Francois in the 7th.

IMO, the Martin pick was not a reach.

I do think that they could have gotten Andre Brown with that pick then picked Martin with their second 4th, but I am not a GM, and for good reason.

If you find someone that you think can possibly play the 5 technique, and be a future starter on a team that runs a 3-4, you take him. Especially in the 4th.

Those players are very far and few between in any draft.

the guy was projected to go UD..the chargers reached more than we did..but they had later picks in the same round so they could afford to do it

Irvin wasn't a reach. Generally, he was projected to go in the 3-4 range...which is where we took him. Martin, on the other hand, is little more than another case of the workout warrior hype machine at work. The biggest attraction for him is his workout performance and the hope that he can translate it into something productive...which rarely happens.

I would agree with this most of the time, but not totally this time.

Martin has a very high IQ, IIRC he had the highest Wonderlic scores of all defensive players, and is super concerned with learning and getting better. I don't think this is another case of Vernon Davis....

You need to look no farther than the 3rd pick of the draft to figure out what I said earlier. You have to have very specific players to run the 3-4, and the 5 tech is one of the hardest to find, outside the NT. When you see someone that could possibly make the switch to that position, you take them. Not to mention he had the strength and quickness to translate to the NT position in a few years. Hence Jamal Williams' replacement.

I am not backing the Chargers totally on this pick, but it's not a bad one for a 3-4 team.

irvin was a reach..there were better overall DT still on the board..but i think we took him because he had better pass rushing skills..and he wont start this season so thats all we will need from him for now

Honestly, how are we suppose to know who is the better talent? We haven't seen them play on the field yet. For all we know, Irvin could be a good dt while the rest flutters but then again, you could be right and Irvin wasn't the best talent out of that group.

Fact is, I say wait and see how Irvin pans out before jumping to conclusions

this is true..i am just going off what i have seen..he is a one year starter..not that big..but his pass rush skills for a DT is good i think we will rotate him a lot..he had 3.0 sacks last season in the SEC so..he has good pass rushing skills which is why i think we reached for him

Until they start giving us fans access to the coaches tapes, there is no way we can know what the scouts and coaches saw in these guys that led them to pick them where they did. And sometimes it can actually come down to their personality and attitude if everything else is close.

    • they have the best defense they've had in a long time...probably the best in the reid/mahommes era.  but i think they are probably the most beatable they've been in a while as well. record doesn't exactly bear that out, but they just don't look as strong on offense as they usually do. lots of reasons for that, like trying to build chemistry with newer receivers, but right now they just aren't as frightening as they typically are. i mean they'll probably win tomorrow, but i don't see them as the strongest team in the AFC right now.
    • He will likely remain unsigned the remainder of this season(barring someone being in a pure QB panic AND making poor decisions) largely due to the cost. I do think he will get multiple offers to be a backup QB and perhaps a couple to potentially start this offseason.  I will continue to beat the same horse over and over.....he should go to a successful team with an established starter. If I were him, go to somewhere like SF, LAR, etc. Somewhere with a successful QB coach and brilliant offensive mind and ALSO a set situation at QB. Ride the pine and adjust for a year or two. Chill and be around better culture. I would suggest the same for Bryce but he will be limited to wherever we can trade him.
    • I dont think the clock has started yet on canales.  Once he gets his guy then the pressure starts.  WFNZ/mike kaye said  yesterday that he thinks there are 4 options here regardless of bryces status, Geno, Fields, Wilson maybe Jones.
