Well here's the deal. I personally think firing Hurney will not do as much immediate good as firing Rivera would. I want us to turn this around as quick as possible. Rivera is proving week in and week out he is not capable of properly utilizing our highest paid players. The amount of guranteed money Hurney has dished out can't be undone at this point. Those players have talent and the right coach would be wise to get the most out of what he was to work with.

If you fire Hurney we are still in cap hell. No new GM is going to have much cap space to work with and will have to do a full blown rebuild and that could take some time because of the money already committed.

Don Gregory imo would have the least amount of impact. Sure he makes his suggestions and all but both the GM/Head coach have to be or should be fully on board/ in agreement of each pick.

Now if you gave me the option to fire all 3 then I would select that. But I take your post as meaning that the other will stick around through the duration of their contract or at least a couple more years.

There is just no scneario where I see us firing Hurney and the new GM wanting to keep Rivera.

We are a team laden with talent in the wrong places. We are continually up against the cap year in and year out, and have had a very bad last 3 years.

Bring in a true football mind, and let him shake things up. If RR is not the guy, a new GM can make that change. However a new coach could not fire Hurney if he is the root of this abysmal football team.

You could possibly give the new GM, who would inherit a cap problem, leeway until after he can offload / let expire contracts that he doesn't want / we shouldn't have and get past the job not being the most desirable in the world.

Well if the GM goes, so potentially do the other two too. I could see Hurney stepping down after this season.

The big questions are:

-are there better GM's out there?

-If we do get a new head coach (I think Rivera is going to get at least three seasons- but I bet McDermott gets the axe this year), do we dip into the college wheel or keep with our Fox philosophy of finding an up and coming coordinator?

-How can we make a decision on the scouting department? Maybe Hurney and Rivera are overriding their decisions, essentially option E: more information needed to answer that question

In all honesty, the op did not give the option but I think you if your going to clean house then you need to clean house. I would have actually been okay with firing Hurney when we fired fox and starting fresh but can't change the past.

So my approach from there was to give Hurney a clean slate with his new head coach. So I gave himk a clean slate but the 2 do not seem to be on the same page.

Thing is I don't know that a new GM will keep Rivera. In fact I think it's highly likely that a new GM comes in here we have a new coach within a year if not at the exact same time. With that comes a whole new staff. Replacing the GM effectively is the "clean slate" option...because in all likelihood they're gonna want their guys in here, not to be the GM for a team full of staff they may or may not believe in.

What's the point in firing Rivera if Hurney has no ability to manage a roster? Get a guy who has a real vision of running a team and let him evaluate Rivera. You can always make that change but the GM spot is the foundation. You need to get that correct or you will continue to make the blunders we have seen and continue to have large talent gaps.
