No excuses: Redskins need a new nickname....

In the end no one will change their names for the Native Americans. Not enough buying power for offense to them to matter.

No sarcasm there. Just stark reality.

With all the Indian gaming casinos in Cali that likely is not the case if the Skins were here. They are raking in huge bucks. White man guilt gives them a casino monopoly here.

Although Arnold has done the unthinkable and actually made them start paying taxes on thier millions.

They were thinking about calling the playoffs in Japanese baseball the "Batan Death March" but why name something so important after a bunch of surrender monkies that can't keep up?

I personally just wish Washington would come out with their own version of Terrible Towels but call them Small Pox Blankets.

lol

Awesome.

The name is offensive and ridiculous.

Anybody that says otherwise doesn't have a clue.

You can't even make a cogent argument based on "honoring" a tribe, it is a derogatory term for a minority group....bad idea. And the fact that they represent a team from our nation's capital makes it even more ludicrous.

My alma mater has been embroiled in a similar situation. The tribe they used no longer exists, but their descendants didn't find the capering "Chief" to be particularily honorable, so he no longer performs.

Good.

The only reason that Florida State gets away with it is that they pay off the Seminole tribe, since they still exist and can take the money. Since the Chief and the Flaming Spear guy are really peas in the same pod. Money talks. And if the tribe is willing to sell their soul and likeness....that is their prerogative. Good for them.

It reminds me of a situation local. We have a town named Pekin, named oddly enough for Peking in China. Up until recently, the nickname of the loacl highschool athletics teams was the Chinks. I sh*t you not.

Luckily, this was changed.

I don't see much of a difference between Chinks and Redskins.

Derogatory terms for a people group.

Shameful, and a vestige of a racist past.

Traditions are nice. Racists traditions are not.

The reality in the situation as that no white person, black person, or Asian person will EVER understand what it means to Native Americans to have sports teams with names like the "Redskins."

We can say "get over it" or "it's tradition, not racism" or "WHO CAREZ LOL" but we'll never know how it feels.

If they (Native Americans) have a problem with it, we should probably respect that.

EDIT: Also, I think the Seminole tribe works with SFU to properly honor the tribe. Article if you are interested: http://www.fsu.edu/news/2005/06/17/seminole.support/

Aha.

One very small PART of the Seminole tribe.

The part that has benefited from University collusion.

And has also been rumored to be under pressure from very wealthy almuni to leave it be or expect trouble on the casino front.

http://www.bluecorncomics.com/seminole.htm

It is easier to go along and get along when you get a li' sumthin' sumthin' for your trouble.

Like being willing to overlook the fact that the portrayal, according to OTHER experts on the tribe, feel that Chief Osceola's costume, warpaint, and Plains Indian spear are totally inaccurate. But it gets the fans riled up, so it's all good.

Again, I'm cool with this if the WHOLE tribe was ok with being bought off.

But they aren't.

So it isn't cool.

Why do I care?

Because it is hypocrisy to say "FSU is ok" and others aren't and not understand that it is EXACTLY the same thing and the only difference was money and favors greasing the wheels of cooperation.

Dontcha think?

You're looking at it as a conspiracy theory where rich white men bought off part of the Seminole Tribe of Florida. Why? Are you really basing part of your argument on a rumor?

You, and the article you posted, make a point of saying that it was only a small part (25%) of the entire Seminole nation that supports FSU and works with FSU on the use of the mascot. Does that make the Seminole Tribe of Florida wrong for doing so?

Also, the Seminole Tribe of Florida designed the costume worn by Chief Osceola, including the horse that he rides. Are you accusing the Seminole Tribe of Florida of being inaccurate about their own heritage? If so, that's fine, but then it would be the tribe, not FSU that is wrong in that respect. Right?

I'm not saying its right of FSU to keep their mascot, but even if I was, it isn't even close to hypocrisy. The situations are completely different, they are at least trying.

Dontcha think?
