Can't defend Cam no more

I've seen enough to know that I don't like him. I'm not talking about his athletic ability - he has enough of that and extra to spare, but he isn't a good leader or decision maker, and when he does make the right decision he often executes poorly. I had reservations about drafting him, but was excited to see his potential in his rookie year. However, after seeing his development/regression to this point, I'm comfortable in saying that he will not be a consistent winning QB in the NFL. We'll roll with him through his rookie contract I'm sure, but I would rather see us start the process of looking for another signal caller- as long as we're looking under new direction/GM.

Some may say that it's premature to judge him, but I've personally seen enough to make my own call. I want a QB who can read defenses quickly and make accurate throws based on what the defense is giving him. Newton shows none of this ability on a consistent basis.

The only edge Newton has working for him is his athletic ability, but the QB position is far more reliant on the mental aspect of the game. Newton is substandard in that regard. When his youth and athletic ability have faded a little in a few years he will have nothing to offer at the position.

Flame away!

I read this post and wanted to offer significant rebuttal but I didn't because your smug and arrogant opinions are so substandard in that regard that I've personally seen enough to know that you have nothing to offer in any consistent manner on this position. I had reservations but I made my own call.

Listen man

I am one of those who severely had high expectations for this team based on last year. I severely overrated them before the season began, but the truth is we only look good on paper, on offense

We spent a lot of money into our backfield which isn't poo this year. We're not even top 15 rushing, and I'm not talking yardage. In fact I consider us the worst offensive team judging by how much points Cleveland put up against the Giants. Cam has a lack of passing weapons period. Ask teams about our WR other than Smith, they'll say who? Some don't even know Olsen, he's not a Gates/Graham/Hernandez/Gonzalez. Seriously sign Plaxico, and Chad. I'm not playing. Trades... figure the poo out

WOW! Haven't seen Cam play so poorly. When he was drafted, he did an interview inwhich he stated that he was going to change the losing attitude of this franchise into a winning one. He was going to change the players around him.

Today looked like the opposite happen..

Matt Ryan had a sophomore slump too.

No excuses. Newton played badly for a significant portion of the game. He had moments, but that last pass was absolutely inexcusable. He's definitely not yet shown himself to be clutch, but not every great QB was great in their second year as a starter. It's still too early in his career to say that we know for sure what he'll be, so let's not act like the ending to his story is already written.

As far as calls for benching, let me repeat what I've said a thousand times. You absolutely do not bench your starting QB unless you plan to leave him on that bench. I've never been a 'temporary benching' advocate when it comes to quarterbacks because it rarely works and it undermines his status as a team leader. So until they're ready to sit him for the long term - something I don't see happening anytime soon - benching shouldn't be an option.

What can be done to help him? Shoring up the O-Line would be a big first step. A great second one? Stop running a college offense in the pros. That kind of thing can work for a little while, but eventually opposing defenses find ways to neutralize it. I have mo reason to believe Newton is incapable of running a pro-style offense (heck, last year's was pretty good) so let him do it. Not like it could get all that much worse at this point.

Bottom Line: You do NOT give up on a #1 overall pick in only his second year. Going that route's a good way to get yourself the #1 pick or close to it next year too (and possibly on a fairly regular basis).

Draft Geno Smith!

I'm shocked you'd say that.

(for those who don't know, Squirrel and I had this conversation elsewhere)

While I'd classify myself to be just as big a Geno Smith homer as you are, using a high pick on another QB next year is something I just can't get behind. I think you have to give Newton at least two more years before you can definitely say 'boom' or 'bust'.

Though I'll grant there are issues in need of fixing, so far, I still say 'boom'. Hope I can still say that two years from now.

I won't say that you guys are overreacting, but Cam is a good NFL QB. He had a poor game, but he also had zero help. The RB's didn't/couldn't do anything, the blocking was ATROCIOUS, and the receivers were dropping everything. With that said, he really doesn't step up in clutch situations :/ I'm disappointed in him as much as you guys are.

Cam's record is 7-14.

This team has had the ball at the end of the games over and over (needing either one score or a few 1st downs to ice the game). In every instance, they have come up short.

Watch the late game performance....Cam has been wilting under the pressure. He has the mental toughness right now of an over easy egg.

So you would like to argue your opinion but you are too dumb or lazy to articulate them....got it.
