The Panthers now have the longest non-winning record streak in the league!

We were a play or two away from being 11-5 last year as well. The difference between good teams and bad ones are the close games. I still say we end up 8-8 but no higher than that.

Really bad teams are generally not in that many close games. Really good teams aren't either.

Losing a close game is better than losing a blowout even if they count the same in the W-L column, because of how each type projects out to future games.

The reason why the 2001 stat is stupid is because it's not a trend. It's literally just one game. The other one is over the course of years and it's in comparison to the rest of the league. Nothing really manipulative about it because we know we have suc-- I mean, been rebuilding, for too long. The statistic is just more conformation for what we already know.

And the reason the "longest with a losing record" streak is stupid is because plenty of terrible teams, worse than the Panthers have been over the course of the current streak, can get off of that list by "literally just one game" at the beginning of the season.

Think about it, if we had beaten the Bucs and lost to the Saints we wouldn't have the record for longest consecutive non-winning streak, would that make us a better team even though we are still 1-3?

Nothing to buy into. Panthers haven't been over .500 for a very long time. It's just one of those stats. It's a factual thing.

It means we haven't been great over that time. It says nothing about 2001.

3 Seasons isn't a very long time. And being 2-1 at some point in the season doesn't mean anything either. So it's an artificial stat.

Our last winning season was 2008. Here's a list of teams that have gone longer without a winning season.

Cleveland Browns

Jacksonville Jaguars

Washington Redskins

St. Louis Rams

Oakland Raiders

Denver Broncos

Buffalo Bills

Seattle Seahawks

But whatever man. Each of those teams scrapped their way to a 3-2 record at some point in the last 3 years so we're the worst thing ever.

No. I'm saying this is just another fact that confirms what most of us who aren't completely blind already know. By itself it's not really all that damning but it is if you've been paying attention. There's numerous topics like this one that compare our history with others and it gets pretty ugly when you take all of it into consideration.

The stat is fine it's just how you interpret it. No one stat is a panacea.

It's like the stat in baseball - consecutive games with a hit. It is pretty meaningless and really has to do with where the hits fall as opposed to how good you or your team necessarily are.

Being .500 or under though has some meaning. It means you aren't a playoff team and it means your fans are a little more depressed. Go to every game without a winning record for a few years. Having a winning record at any point in the season means playoffs are more likely than not. Being under .500 means the opposite.

We have been unlikely to be in the playoffs for too long

But yeah you are right, the streak can be snapped with one lucky 1-0 start. We aren't the worst team in the league because of this stat.

Right, and that's my problem with it. I know we haven't been a playoff team for three seasons, but it the basic story behind it was: Jake's career hit a wall, rookie QB (Clausen), rookie QB (Newton). It's not exactly a tragic and hopeless story being that we have probably found our franchise guy after an 8-8 year and two losing seasons.

We agree. You need to go start a thread about the recent unemployment numbers. It's one data point!

Oh yeah. This season has been so much better to watch than 2 years ago. That was a miserable low. We have lots of hope.

But winning is just better.

Season not over yet

Not very kind company to be in with.
