Cam Newton - "I'm A Football Player" WTF

So...in the 20 games of the Newton era you deem the college offense that has given us the best ground attack and most explosive offense during that 20 game stretch.....is the problem.

I'll disagree and go defense and ST is the issue.

We didn't run this style of offense until late last year. Cam and the guys were playing fine and running fine in the pro style offense for the most part of last year. Yet you see what defenses do to this attack. At times we are shut down. We never were shut down at any point last year. The common denominator as to why we were shut down this year is the read option.

Only gets shut down when we play without a zone read RB.

I keep saying it and the games support it. Rivera supports it. Stewart is the key....if he isn't suited up the defensive lines have a different gameplan.

Read option isn't the issue, bc we are explosive and dominant with it. Issue is only running it as a core without Stewart. Nothing opens up bc defenses just pass rush every down. Stewart presents a different threat inside that makes teams actually read and react

We were shut down against the Lions last year.

35 pts while averaging 5 yards per carry? What did they shut down.

D and ST were utter poo against the Lions.....they have been the problem during the Newton era

Wait who am I thinking about then?

Ok, I got the Lions and Titans games mixed up.

We were shut down against the Titans last year.

So we have been shutdown 1 out of 18 games with Stewart vs every game without him?

I don't know about that, Stewart didn't have a fantastic game against the Falcons. It really doesn't matter how good the QB or RB that are running the play, it can easily be shut down. On average, it probably loses more yards per attempt, than your average running play. It's only good for big gains, one or two times. That is why the best way to use it, is sparingly if at all. So who cares if you get 50-60 yards on one or two read options. For the rest of the times you use it, you may pick up 2 yards or negative yards.

Yeah the Titans were the only game we were shut down in. Yet in four games this year, we were shut down twice running the option. So if this continues, we will be shut down at least 8 games this year. Talk about reverting, and this coaching staff ensuring Cam has a sophmore slump.

But is isn't about just his touches....about what he represent. Defenses don't pass rush all game.

And it can't be easily shut down..... bc teams only shut it down without our primary read option RB. Williams is a complimentary piece to the read option....not what makes it work. Cam and Stewart are the drivers and Williams works into the machine.

Regardless of who we play from here on out.... if Stewart and Cam play....it maybe gets shutdown once. bad days happen. It is just a simple physical mismatch.....something will be open to exploit.

Stewart is the only true read option RB and definitely the only one built on our team to run it in the NFL. Only was shutdown without him.....that is like running it to an exaggerated degree with DA and wondering why it won't work. Threat changes....defensive line plays the scheme different.

You have to have an inside zone read threat which only Stewart brings.

They need to scrap it if Williams is the only RB bc DLs just pass rush....and kill it. The outside runs are the only threat. Sure, Williams can take it up the gut but he is no threat to make a player miss with contact. Rivera backed this up over a week ago when addressing why Stewart was needed back.

Stewart sets Cam up, sets the pass up, sets up the pitch work

I'm going to have to see this scheme with Stewart in it a little more before I agree with this point. I believe if anything, having both Williams and Stew in there makes the play go. (Not a great example, the but the most success we've seen with this type offense was with them against the Bucs last year) So if Williams were injured, I believe the read option would struggle as you say when we didn't have Stew in there. Ultimately, from what I've seen, I have to say this play is best used sparingly.

Yet let me ask you this question. If Andrew Luck was our QB, would we still see the read option for 50% of our plays?

I guess you guys just close your eyes on the Williams runs, and td out of the zone read.

I don't know how else you can even begin to claim Williams doesn't work in the zone read.

Stewart is a more punishing runner, in turn breaking more tackles.

Doesn't mean Williams isn't good in the zone read.
