Gimmick Run Plays

Why does Carolina use so many gimmick run plays? Just about every other team lines up in standard formations with the same and or better results.

Really? Just about every team got 200 rushing yards this week?

Must have been a record breaking week, wonder why I haven't heard about it on Sportscenter.

When you look at the elite teams, teams everyone pick to meet in the superbowl, how many of those teams have their QBs running an option? Point blank, it's a slow developing play, that can be shut down. We may gain 40 yards with the first two option reads. Yet after that we either get two yards or lose two. I don't know about those who don't mind seeing these kinds of plays, but I want Cam to actually become a QB full time, with the ability to run like no other. I want to become elite, and that won't happen with these option plays as a main part of our offense. Hindsight is 20/20, yet if I knew Chud would revert to a college scheme for this offense, I wouldn't have wasted my time supporting him to come back as our OC.

Weak arguement.....since we are the only team in the NFL with a starting QB built and equipped to run it.

And with Stewart on the field....teams don't stop the offense. Last season we had one of the greatest rushing attacks in NFL HISTORY and this year? We average 200+ yards on the ground when we have the same lineup from last year.

So the Carolina read option has made this team one of the best rushing attacks in history......we just need our read option RB.

How anyone could be against that.....is silly. Now if Stewart is hurt, I endorse not using it bc you need a NFL read option RB to impact the opposing D

I'm sorry. I didn't realize we were having a successful season thus far.

Nice work removing the CONTEXT to which I was responding, which was this:

The Read Option: 14 plays 109 yards; 7.79 ypc.

If you'd like to respond to what I'm saying, it would really be nice if you actually responded to what I was saying.

If this is about having defenses thinking about Cam running the ball, he doesn't need this option for that. If Cam's a threat to run, he's a threat to run. We saw this right before Cam's rushing TD, when ATL blitzed us. Cam ran right up the middle for a big gain. It was masterful! It also didn't involve an option, because if it did, those blitzers would have destroyed either Cam or Williams/Stewart.

It's a waste of time play, and probably loses more yards on average, than you ordinary run play.

Its not about running it in general

It's about when to run it

Dont run it with 3 min left and its time for power running

on the last drive we were getting first downs with it until that untimely fumble. I would like to see more i form with play action bootlegs though..Cam is having to dodge sackers when he's trying to run on a pass play atm, I want some pass plays that are equal threat run/pass so it really freezes the defense.

Don't paint "elite teams" with one brush because they aren't. The 49ers don't play like the Patriots who don't play like the Texans who don't play like the Packers etc.

Teams don't start playing a certain style then become elite, they look at their players strengths and weaknesses and they adapt their playing style to that.

The Patriots in 2007 played 5 wide reciever sets more than anyone else in football because it suited their players. In 2011, with 2 start TEs, they reversed their strategy and played 2 TE jumbo packages constantly.

If the Patriots had the personnel to run the option effectively, they would do it.

Again, we historically had one of the best attacks in the NFL history in 2011 and in 2012 average 200+ yards.....with the read option as a core of our attack. Saying it is wasted play ignores all reality.

Stewart and Cam are the key to getting it to roll. It isn't about just Cam running. It is about forcing a D to lineup every play and WORRY about the inside Stewart read....WORRY about the outside Cam keeper and WORRY about what they are late picking up if neither option was used and it is a pass. It flat out stresses a D.

Take Stewart out and a defensive gameplan changes. You only worry about outside runs which then allows them to basically pass rush all game instead of looking to defend an inside read.

And having the read option as your base sets up that Cam run....even thought it wasn't a read option. Defense lines up knowing they have to defend it.....then see a unique look after the snap with the RB just running free up the middle. It all plays off the read option.

Yet those packages aren't like the read option. The option is too slow for this league, where every player runs 100 miles per hour. What is there to read? A DE may be locked on the RB, and Cam decides to run. Sometimes it works, yet most times there is a LB or safety waiting to defend whoever got the ball. Not to mention, the hand off can be fumbled or something stupid like that happens. There's a reason why this play is more geared toward college. A league where the best players play for a few teams out of the country. Yet here in the NFL, everyone has elite players.

Above all else, the main problem with it, is it slows down Cam's development. You saw how long he was waiting for receivers to get open, not anticipating where his guys should be. This is because Cam is spending half his time in practice, running that sorry option play, and looking to run. I'll tell you this right now, if this is the gameplan for the rest of Cam's career (depending on how long Rivera and Chud is here, because I doubt Chud gets a HC job after this season), we need to go ahead and trade him. Because we are not winning a superbowl like this, and worst case scenario, Cam turns out like Vick.

Well let me ask you this question, is it Stewart that really makes the play work? Or is it a combination of Stewart and Williams that makes the defense be on their heels? Because so far, Stewart is the only one that missed games. We haven't seen what he is like without D-Will in the line-up.

Nonetheless, I think the argument with being one of the best rushing attacks last year is moot, because we didn't start running the option oriented offense until late last year. We were doing just fine without it, we even looked better offensively last year. We didn't have games where we were straight shut down, like we had this year.

You credit the two games this year where the play stalled to Stew being out, but I doubt that. We only played 4 games so far, and that's not a big enough sample size to say Stew is what makes everything go. I believe the option works sometimes, and sometimes it doesn't. Also if it does work, it only works for a couple of times. The other times we are shut down.
