Falcons phantom 4th Timeout

the odds of us scoring on that play are very slim even with them having only 10 men on the feild. The real issue is we snapped the ball the refs blew the whistle basically giving the falcons the extra timeout. We did not get a chance to run the play at all with them out of position and down a man. I dont think it would have changed the outcome but they did essentially get an extra timeout and the ability to adjust to the play

refs screwed up. ATL got what they wanted, a chance to fix their mistake. they shouldn't have.

i don't know if it cost us the game, but it sure didn't do us any favors.

i just think it's awesome that when refs screw up like this that there is no accountability.

Our coach talked about it today..... They came to tell him we was out of Timeouts and one of our players got on the field... Did he use the system... Yup... Its it a penelty.. No... Did yall lose because of that... No

the right thing for the refs to do was to ignore the time out and not blow the whistle. they didn't owe smith anything at that point.

^^^ We know that it's not a penalty. The question is did the refs, knowing that the falcons didn't have any timeouts, blow the whistle and allow the falcons to adjust..

I believe that they did. I thought at the time that the refs screwed up... but there was no foul, and there's nothing that could be done about it once the ref blew the whistle.

I thought there was a penalty for calling a TO and not having one... but, this is all could could find on Time out calls.

A team cannot buy an excess time out for a penalty. However, a fourth time out is allowed without penalty for an injured player, who must be removed immediately. A fifth time out or more is allowed for an injury and a five-yard penalty is assessed if the clock was running. Additionally, if the clock was running and the score is tied or the team in possession is losing, the ball cannot be put in play for at least 10 seconds on the fourth or more time out. The half or game can end while those 10 seconds are run off on the clock.
