Last night, we explained that ESPN is preparing a “character study” of Saints linebacker Jonathan Vilma and former Saints defensive coordinator Gregg Williams, and that ESPN Feature Producer Barry Abrams is sending letters to players in an effort to dig up some information.

Thereafter, Vilma posted a copy of the letter on Twitter, along with Abrams’ phone number and email address.

“Why is ESPN secretly conducting a character study on me?” Vilma asked on Twitter. “They really think I wouldn’t find out?”

Vilma’s Twitter timeline since last night has some funny stuff, including messages encouraging Saints fans to contact Abrams.

We wonder whether Vilma’s reaction will now be used as part of the character study. In the end, that may be all the dirt they manage to dig up.

It's clear you folks don't care because the player isn't one of your own. But there is something much more sinister going on here. WHY IS OUR SPORTS MEDIA NOW INSTIGATING IN WHAT SHOULD BE HANDLED BETWEEN THE NFL AND THE SAINTS.

Does ESPN/NFLN now feel they own part of the NFL? Is it because they pay money to air various games? We need to wak up and see the seriousness of what's going on and not be so happy when it's happening to someone or a team we rival.
