John Isner, true Panthers fan

I'm a fairly new tennis fan, so outside of late Roddick, Isner's really the first major US tennis player with star potential.

Men's American tennis is dead.

Andy Roddick is one of the most over rated, over hyped athletes in American history.

He couldn't beat Federer in Wimbledon who was playing on a broken leg.

I was never a Roddick fan and I agree he was overrated, but he was still THE premier tennis player for a very short time. ATP rankings aren't really a flawed system, this isn't ESPN power rankings.

he won the US open like 11 years ago and did nothing after that except choke, get beat, and lose to Federer in a GS every now and then.

The way he was elevated as some American icon and hero when he retired a month ago was laughable.

One thing to like about Roddick though is his wife is a die hard Panthers/Tarheel fan. No joke.

And she's hot. But all tennis players have hot as sh*t wives.

No other American male tennis player has won a grand slam since Andy did it. There was a lot of hope for him becoming the next great american tennis player following Pete Sampras. Realistically, he didn't have the game to do it. He was mostly all serve. I actually find it impressive that he was able to elevate his game to the point where he won a grand slam. I think he certainly earned his spot as an American tennis icon, and as someone to look up to for young American tennis players.

Lots of American collegiate and professional tennis players have been trying to do what he did, and none of them have really come close. They have all choked, gotten beat, and lost to the Europeans. Andy also played in an era when Roger Federer was dominating. Roger is heralded at the greatest tennis player to ever play the game, and he actually made Pete Sampras look like a scrub early in his career.

I am a John Isner fan and hope that he is able to elevate his game and win a Grand Slam, just like Andy did. He is actually a similiar type player, who depends mostly on his serve. He doesn't move well or have great groundstrokes. He is still young though, so with the right coaching he could still become something special. The next best thing the Americans have is Donald Young and Ryan Harrison. I don't believe that either of them are ever going to be real contenders. Ryan Harrison probably has the most potential, but he acts like a spoiled brat and doesn't seem to grasp the mental aspect of the game.
