With that being said, can you explain to me why we have such a problem accomplishing this, much less even trying it?

I can't recall the last game I saw, that resembled any pressure on any receiver off the LOS.

I don't hold myself as any kind of authority or that knowledgeable about the fine details but this is what I gathered. We primarily played a cover 3 last year. That means that the field is separated into 3 deep zones or areas and for us it was the corners and the free safety each were responsible for 1/3 of it. The linebackers played zone underneath and Harris played closer to the line as the SS. That means the corners have to establish their drop which is usually around 10 yards deep off the LOS. Hence one reason for no pressure. Also if 2 receivers, for example, go high/ low on the outside (they both run up the field and do out routes one at 5 yards and the other at 15 yards) it makes the corner pick one or the other or try and cover both of them. If the corner takes the high man, the linebacker has to slide over and take the low receiver. This is because we didn't move the corners depending on what the offensive formation was as many teams do. If the linebacker doesn't cover or gets there late. then the receiver is wide open.

That is a serious oversimplication of the possibilities but shows how the corner can normally play 10 yards off the line of scrimmage which will give you no pressure on the LOS and that you can easily flood a zone which means the corner is pushed deep and if the linebacker bites on playaction, the receiver can be wide open.

Ultimately if the corners are playing deeper then the linebacker have to cover the zones closer to the line of scrimmage and pressure the receiver off the line. We didn't do that and preferred to drop back and react versus attack and pressure. It keeps you from giving up big plays but kills you by degrees as teams dink and dunk down the field.

I only saw a couple USC games last year, but in the games I saw he didn't stand out. In fact I never heard of him till we drafted him. Was he really as good as you SC fans are saying, or are you just glad we drafted a SC player? Im thinkin its probably the later.

That defense was rated #2 defense in NCAA at one point in the year but then fell off halfway through the season. He has a lot of tools and intensity. I watched as many games as I could being in Lost Angeles but I saw a LOT of promise. He loves to lay hits and loves to get the ball.

I think he will be like a Ricky Manning Junior. He will get pushed around by the big recievers but will make big plays at times to. Just like Manning he is small but will get in your face as well. [/quote
