Pete Prisco blurb

Recommended Posts

---It's time for the Panthers and the Redskins to let Newton and Robert Griffin III play real quarterback. That read option is going to get one of them killed or hurt. You know how easy it is to break a finger or a hand or whatever. Don't expose your quarterback to meaningless hits. I know Griffin can run, and he had 85 yards against the Bengals, but it's too risky to have your franchise quarterback playing like a running back.

Disagree. You play football, you might get hurt, bottom line. Look at high school and college where the read option is almost the standard. Kids aren't getting hurt running that as much as they are scrambling.

Yeah, but they can knock cam out just for the hell of it, even if he pitches or not. They get essentially a free hit.

the standard?

There's quite a bit of difference between those levels of football, just because you do something in high school doesn't make it the right thing in the NFL. In HS they rarely attempt FGs because the range is shorter....plenty of real differences that are taken into consideration.

Us Panther fans, or at least myself, am more worried about production rather than Cam getting hurt. Like most have said, we don't have to throw it in the garbage, just not make it our base offense.

I was gonna make a thread about this but had a lot going on and didn't have time. Not Prisco's blurb, but it coincides with it.

I wanted to discuss how we need to limit the read-option to a minimum as it appears Chud has now became dependent on it in his gameplans. Add to that, the Bucs and Giants showed how to shut it down completely for the most part. Or at least render it ineffective.

How?

As I was watching those games, I thought of something, as simple as it sounds... What makes it such a threat in the first place? A QB who has incredible athletic/running ability. Well, guess what? If you eliminate the QB as an option then it just simply becomes a handoff. The Bucs and Giants keyed on Cam.

I could be wrong, but it essentially looked as if the Giants were saying, "we'll live with the handoffs, but YOU (Cam), aren't running it." So, the option just became a clunky, delay-style handoff. At that point, you're back to meat and potatoes offense. No gimmicks, no cutesy-Chud stuff. Basics.

Cam has all the ability to be what Steve Young or Steve McNair was - a refined passer in the pocket with exceptional running ability. It's time we focus on the meat and potatoes and stop trying to be cute. Cam is a tough dude, so it's not injuries I'm worried about... It's the offense itself is getting bogged down because teams are taking Cam out of the equation on the read-options and Chud won't give it up.

Personally, I think Chud is outsmarting himself right now. The way he uses plays to set up other plays, is a waste of time anymore. Cam HAS already established himself as a runner. He no longer has to run. The threat is already there. I beleive Chud thought we would be having more success at this point. So those plays that didn't work, would now be working for a different result.

To me it looks like he wants the D to think he is willing to do anything at anytime. Which in theory, should keep the D guessing. The problem comes when his plays don't work. He has no backup plan on how to fool the D when his pet plays don't work.

Using the read option look to pass over the LBers cheating on the run. Would be something I would like to see.

Also, I believe Chud has such confidence in Cam's ability to pick up third downs that he plays too much with the first two downs. Which put us behind schedule, which makes it just that much harder to pick up third downs.

Just a couple of thoughts. And GOOOOO CATS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I want less options but more scrambling. I'd honestly rather see us do a no-nonsense handoff more often. I think Cam throws well coming off those play actions versus the shotgun sweep play actions. DeAngelo would benefit so much from an I-form every now and then. The offense is always at it's best when they're able to play physical.

I think he needs to really focus on picking his points to scramble. I know he really wants to stay in the pocket and that's a great sign, but the team needs him to put them on his back and get a first down sometimes. It's all about picking the right spots to take over.

    • There's some big assumptions in here - first, I think Canales HAS helped Bryce a poo ton. To pretend he hasn't is asinine. Has he fixed him?  I mean, the dude looks like he could perhaps be a backup or low-end starter now, whereas he looked like he didn't belong in the NFL a year ago. You're talking about a coach that brought one of the worst NFL QBs of all time to a point where he may actually be a low-end starter. That IS impressive. Second, the bolded. Come on - given the offense, the dude is far from "trending towards bust." He definitely needs work but he's shown an impressive ability to get open. He's contributing to an anemic offense. The dude is our leading receiver (though he'll be #2 in yardage by end of season by a little, as Thielen does better per game).  As to his coaching, he had this team competing and believing against 3 of the better teams in the NFL, despite the lack of talent, and despite our QB situation.  Yes, things fell apart vs DAL, and he was outcoached. But that will happen with young coaches IMO.  I don't think it indicates he cant' be better. The idea of "pulling off the bandage" is ridiculous. Who would want to coach here if we fired this guy after one season?
    • Whatever they are in totality the cowboys are beat up all to hell on both sides of the ball and even that was too much for lil Bryce to overcome.  Bryce defenders have to hype up every other team and trash every other part of the panthers just because of the situation they’ve put themselves in.
    • JB had a first round grade in the eyes of a lot scouts based on HIS TALENT LEVEL. If not for the injury he would have gone higher in the draft, possibly between the middle and the end of round 1. To get him just before the 50th pick is a steal. He'd be on a 4 year deal. You can't even renegotiate until the end of the season 3. You're basically paying him nothing for 3 seasons. I don't buy into all back are interchangeable. No they're not. You have average backs, good backs, then your great-exceptional backs. The latter category doesn't grow on trees. If a back is special it pays to keep them. The key is knowing the difference between the first two categories and the third one.
