Cam segment coming up on ESPN

Issue remains, guys like Jordan Gross called Steve out for a reason.....just bc Cam needed something said doesn't mean any method is then correct. Smitty went through the media.....and THAT always shows someone who still doesn't know how to lead. Beason calling out Peppers that way also was Beason learning.....wrong way.

So I quoted you and brought this up before, so I'll try again. When Beason called out Peppers he did so in an interview - before that interview there were no rumblings or rumors of Beason having an issue with Peppers play.

In Smith's case; he was overheard by the media yelling at Cam to get up and absorb the last few minutes of the game. He didn't blast that in some interview, or go on the radio to get that sentiment across - he was overheard on the sideline during the game by Brett Jensen. The damage had already been done. He was then asked directly about the comments and he responded honestly.

Now for him to have done it the proper way for you, what would you have had him done? Deny having said anything when asked, despite having already been quoted by the media. Claim that what Brett Jensen heard wasn't actually what he said?

I'm a little confused about what you wanted him to do to here.

Oh dear.

You realise that was a miscommunication, right? Williams didn't want to let go of the ball because he thought it'd be fumbled i.e. Newton took too long deciding on whether to give it to him or not, so Williams took it upon himself to carry the football.

I said as much. It very well could have just been miscommunication, hence the "circumstantial bullshit". It very well could have been that Williams, after having it happen a few times earlier in the game, was tired of Cam pulling the ball back and getting stuffed for a loss, so he decided to try to make a play for himself. The reality is that we don't know.

ITA This was my problem with the entire thing. If you want to say something to him pull him aside and do it. If you feel that you just had to do it on the sideline when the press ask you about it just say no comment. Once the press smells blood they will be all over that team and all over Cam and that helps no one. IMO a leader always does what is best for the team, airing your dirty laundry in the press is never best for the team. Also it only causes tension between you and the person that you claim you are trying to help.

No.

I see a fanbase and city that fails to see our franchise is following the blueprint of how to ruin a young and talented player....

They don't see it and that's the problem. Maybe they need to look around the league and see how teams with the same type of attitude as their own rank in this league and treated by the media.

The only blue-print they should be following is one that will lead to a healthy and successful team but it's clear some love the blue-print of teams where receivers are telling the QBs what to do and calling them out in the media.

Like we haven't seen that script before with the Bengals, Bears, and as recent as the Jets. See how clownish the Jets now look. The Bengals had to get rid of their receivers and their QB wanted out. The Bears calmed down and allowed Cutler to be himself. The Jets is still on the circus bus in the media.

Oh goodness. Did you say that with a tear in your eye?

Cam's attitude is his own fault. The guy gets paid millions of dollars to perform, he touts his abilities through endorsements and refers to himself in third person in press conferences. Now the apologist are saying that it's our fault he has a bad attitude, and that Cam's a victim and he's above the treatment of our other players. All this wouldn't even matter if he performed, but he doesn't. His stat line looks good sometimes but he possesses ZERO leadership. How many come from behind wins? Where's his C? I feel bad for the kid in certain regards....but business is business and winning is winning and if he hasn't turned his play around through the first half of Atlanta he needs to be benched.

No comment always works

No comment would lead the media to run stories about how there is a rift between Cam and Smith, how the locker room is a mess and that the team is fragmented. That's simply not true, and by talking to the media Smith essentially ran damage control. He aired out that he wanted Cam to continue to grow by soaking in the game despite how bad a performance the team has put in - to never let a learning experience go wasted no matter how depressed you are about your performance. Smith is a fiery asshole and he isn't going to hold your hand and talk nicely into your ear when he has something to say.

No comment does nothing but portray Smith as still being angry about something. I don't believe Smith was every really "angry" about anything.

And the media isn't doing that now? You might want to surf the web and read some of the headlines. It is better to let them speculate and lockdown your team and handle it from within rather than put it out all out there. That didn't work well for the Jets last year when players were all over the media being HONEST.

Why should I seek help?

Steve Smith is not a champion of all that is good and right. He sucker punched TWO teammates. He bullied a rookie QB. He kicked out at an opponent and (basically) lost a game for the Panthers.

Now he's calling out Newton in the media.

He's a great football player, don't get me wrong, but I wouldn't give him the time of day off the field.

Newton is a 2nd year pro who has the hopes of the franchise weighing down on his shoulders. He is who he is - people are trying to force him into being something he's not. So what if he sits on his own on the bench? So what if he doesn't look enthralled when the OC is running through the previous series.

Is he productive? Does the team follow him? Yes. That's all I need to know. Not every QB has to be Peyton fuging Manning.

We have MUCH bigger problems than Newton taking losses to heart and being bitchy with the media.

Did you just make this about Smitty??? The guy who washes needy people's feet and them puts new shoes on them? Or are you talking about the guy who personally flew any player and their families to Hawaii for the Pro Bowl? Because he did that last year as well.

Don't talk about what you lack knowledge in. I will eat you alive. You have no idea what you're talking about in regards to Smitty or Cam

Others picking up on this and piling on:

More disturbing than Newton's poor play against New York's defense was the visual of the passer sulking on the bench, something that tweaked his veteran receiver, Steve Smith, and didn't sit well with observers.

"You gotta start playing the game mentally instead of physically," NFL Network's Kurt Warner said. "And that's where Cam is lacking right now."

It's an easy week to pile on Newton. Perhaps his lowest moment against the Giants was unearthing his tedious Superman act after scoring a touchdown that left Carolina down 26-7. Handing the ball to the official and marching back to the sideline would have been preferable. It was a clownish performance, and the point some have made is that a savvy veteran wouldn't be caught dead pulling that charade. Chalk it up as a learning opportunity for Newton, but let's not give up on the young man.
