The Root of the Problem: Hurney

As I was sitting in the stands watching the game last night, I started to think why can't we get over the hump. We have talented players, although many positions stacked much more than others. We have some good coaches in Rivera and Chud. And then it got me to thinking that really what it boils down to is that Hurney is our problem. I don't know if he is necessarily a bad talent evaluator (I have absolutely hated some of his picks and do so more today with the way they panned out) but he just doesn't allocate the talent/money in the right places.

The difference between us and perennial playoff-caliber team is depth. We have bright spots in some positions while others are just depleted with talent. And much of that comes down to not being able to spread the talent around because he makes ridiculous contracts that leave us with little room to do anything. He needs to go.

I also read this article this morning where it shares the same sentiments and I used it to support some of my thoughts. Don't agree with all of it but it's the gist of what I am saying.

As a result of all that largesse, the 6-10 Panthers entered this offseason nearly $10 million over the cap and unable to make any sort of foray into free agency. Holes at wide receiver and defensive tackle and depth issues on the offensive line and in the secondary weren't properly addressed, forcing the Panthers to bring in borderline rotation guys from other teams like Dwan Edwards and Haruki Nakamura to start. When the injuries inevitably show up, the players behind them are even weaker.

We can complain about how our this or that part of our team sucks but until we have a GM that allows for wise spending it won't ever get better.
