This thread got me to snooping around the Internets about our solar system. I was always under the impression Jupiter was a giant ball of gas. Can a comet impact on a gaseous planet cause a fireball like that? My pea sized brain is wondering why it wouldn't simply pass through.

I also read that I believe Uranus was impacted by an object the size of EARTH and that is why it's tilted on it's side. Also in 2009 Jupiter had an impact the size of the Pacific ocean from a comet or Asteroid. It's kind of scary to hear about the frequency of impacts in our neighborhood. I guess we are just a smaller target. Hell you can look up at the moon and it's covered in impact craters.

It's hard to fathom the magnitude of that Jupiter fireball. It had to be several thousand miles wide in a matter of 2 seconds. It's easy to feel small yet I've listened to De Grasse Tyson talk about how large we are in the universe.

Really cool an Amateur Astronomer got the footage, and on an LX200 12"! Must have been a massive collision.

Anyone else an AA? I have a Meade LX800 that I used to run lapses on Saturn and The Orion Nebula through my laptop on crystal clear winter nights. Light pollution from downtown has made that less exciting, but I will go up to the mountains once every couple months and do that now.

I had the SETI feed on my laptop for 6 months. Absolutely NOTHING happened. -_-

While Jupiter isn't solid in the sense that Earth or Mars is it has enough atmospheric density that anything traveling at interplanetary speeds that makes contact with it will explode from the increase in pressure and the friction of the deceleration.

this. also, jupiter gets hit not because of it's large size but because of it's incredibly large gravitational pull... a lot of people think that one of the reasons the earth has survived for as long as it has is partly due to us being so close to a massive gas giant.

also, the moon has so many craters because it doesn't have an atmosphere to burn up rocks that would hit it... they ALL impact.
