Something Huge Hit Jupiter Today

Slooh is running a live cam in the Canary Islands to check for if the impact left a scar of the sorts. http://events.slooh.com/

Really cool an Amateur Astronomer got the footage, and on an LX200 12"! Must have been a massive collision.

Anyone else an AA? I have a Meade LX800 that I used to run lapses on Saturn and The Orion Nebula through my laptop on crystal clear winter nights. Light pollution from downtown has made that less exciting, but I will go up to the mountains once every couple months and do that now.

Very cool man. I live in nyc and i dont have a car so i use an old school astroscan (sometimes i feel like a 12 year old) and go for deep space stuff. Gives me the portability i need but one day i really want to have a proper setup and do some photography.

Id love to have somethin like an lx800.

Post some pics guy!

Nice! I have a buddy with an Astrocam up near Chapel Hill that I love to look through when I am up there. My 800 isn't very well suited for deep space since I can't get a very wide field of view (even modded), so I get a treat when I get to visit.

My scoping laptop is actually dead atm - had to order a new battery - but I will definitely post what I have grabbed since I have started imaging. And subsequent images as I get out there.

I had a fantastic capture of the Pleiades for my desktop wallpaper for a while that I would have posted but can't find it atm =/

I don't know how you go about identifying where it specifically hit on the planet but here's the live solar system:

It could have literally just saved the earth from something we may have never detected

Yeah, around this time, when Earth passes closer to Jupiter, you really don't want to learn about a surprise collision.
