Marty Hurney's record when signing FAs vs. not

From 2002 to 2006, Marty Hurney had a philosophy of signing great free agents to compliment the guys he would draft. In those 5 years, we had a regular season/playoff record of 49-38, 56% winning percentage.

From 2007 to the present, Hurney has emphasized nothing but our own draft picks. Draft, draft, draft, that's all he's preached in his actions and words. In those 5 years and 1 game, we had a regular season/playoff record of 35-48, 42% winning percentage.

I don't know if this is mandated by Richardson or not. If it's not, Hurney needs to be fired yesterday. This has just gotten pathetic.

The issues we have directly correlate to the clusterfugs of the 2008-2011 drafts.

Not signing at least midlevel people to fill in the gaps is really hurting the Panthers right now.

I have long been a Hurney defender, but this is getting absurd.

I mean both starting DTs, one starting safety, the FB/3rd down back and the left guard came to the team via free agency. The problem was on offense yesterday, specifically the running game, where I think most of us assumed we had good talent. I heard very few people in the offseason suggesting signing free agents to bolster the run game, but maybe I just missed it.

and ALL of them are lower tier free agents.

Both the Edwards played ok. Dwan was not as dominate as his stat card shows.

Nakamura is very pedestrian.

We didn't need another RB. Tolbert was the biggest FA signing at a position that didn't really need improvement.

Hangman looked like a UDFA rookie yesterday.

The issues with the run game started 100% with piss poor blocking from the OLine.

Exactly re: lower tier FAs only. I like a guy like Dwan Edwards, but what does it say about this roster when a Buffalo castoff instantly becomes our best defensive tackle?

In a perfect world Dwan would be part of our rotation. Someone to really top off a great DLine. But thats ok we have lots of RBs and Linebackers.

Right, but how does one blame yesterday on not having signed free agents this offseason? Was anybody suggesting we should sign offensive linemen? Kalil played horrible yesterday but I don't think he needed to be replaced in the offseason. Hangartner played bad but was already a free agent pickup. Point being, if you wanna say our roster sucks so Hurney should be fired, fine, people might disagree but you can make the case I guess. But blaming yesterday's performance on the lack of free agent signings doesn't make sense, because it's hard to put that loss on the positions everybody thought we should sign guys at(DT, safety, #2 corner, #2 WR, RT). I'd like to see us run the ball a little better, and I thought the push by the interior offensive lineman was pathetic. Cam also forced some balls into coverage that I think he'd like to have back.

That was not entirely the problem and no huge number of free agents would have won that game.

The issues with the right side of the OLine, Secondary, and Defensive Line absolutlely have to do with the horrible drafting and refusal to address said issues by our front office.
